How Coconut Oil Can Benefit Your Skin

If you are looking for a product that can—seemingly—do it all, look no further than the inside of your kitchen cabinets. That’s right, the coconut oil that you use in your favorite recipes can also be used on your skin. Although, with all the hype surrounding this go-to oil on social media, we’re sure you were already aware of this. Leave it to Mother Nature to create one amazing, universal substance that makes us question how we ever lived without it. And, while it can’t fix every problem, coconut oil can benefit the skin in a number of ways and we list a few below:

Hydration Powerhouse

Of all the skin care benefits coconut oil touts, providing a natural source of moisture is perhaps the most well known—and widely accepted. Coconut oil’s combination of saturated fats are part of the reason it hydrates the skin and can even help to lock in that moisture on the skin’s surface. Have a dry spot of skin that just doesn’t seem to budge? Give coconut oil a try! But remember, with coconut oil a little goes a long way.

Free-Radical Fighting Antioxidants

Another benefit of everyone’s—well, nearly everyone’s—favorite oil? Vitamin E. This nourishing vitamin is a known antioxidant which can help skin fight environmental factors like free radials and pollution. While you’ll still need to wear a daily broad-spectrum SPF to prevent sun damage, adding coconut oil to your routine may be worth a shot!

What to Look For

When using coconut oil cosmetically, you want to look for one that is in its purest form—meaning that it should be extra virgin, 100 percent non-GMO, and has not been bleached, refined, deodorized, or hydrogenated.
