What Causes Enlarged-Looking Pores?

Pores, pores, pores. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, we’re all stuck with them. Though when they appear large and in charge, it’s safe to say we all wish they didn’t exist on our complexion. Many factors can contribute to enlarged pores. Curious to know what they are? Keep reading.

OILY SKIN

People who have naturally oil skin tend to have larger pores. Why? Because when dirt, excess sebum—the oily substance our pores secrete to keep our skin from drying out—and other impurities collect on the skin’s surface, it forms a clog. These clogs can make pores appear larger and may lead to blackheads and blemishes if not properly cared for.

AGE

As we age, our skin naturally begins to produce less collagen, an important component to skin that’s bouncy and youthful-looking. This loss of elasticity and eventual sagginess can make skin appear less firm with pores that appear larger as a result.

UNPROTECTED SUN EXPOSURE

UV rays and free radicals can wreak havoc on skin that’s not adequately protected, especially after prolonged periods of time. When skin cells are damaged or destroyed, it can make pores appear larger.

GENETICS

In general, men tend to have larger pores than women. However, some women might experience enlarged pores as a result of hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, menopause, or a genetic predisposition. If your parents have large pores and oily skin, there’s a chance that could be passed down to you as well.

NOT MAINTAINING A REGULAR SKIN CARE ROUTINE

Abiding by a daily skin care routine is tantamount to clean, healthy-looking skin. If you fail to take care of your skin, pores are more likely to swell up with grime. As we discussed earlier, sebum, dirt, and impurities can pile up on the skin’s surface and eventually create a clog. If that clog is not detoxified, pores will continue to appear enlarged and the risk of a breakout will remain at an all time high.

Now that we’ve covered the potential causes of enlarged pores, you must be wondering how you can bid them farewell once and for all. Well, you’re in luck! Read this for steps you can take to visibly diminish the appearance of large pores
