According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), in every inch of skin there are around 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, 1,000 or more nerve endings, and about 19 million skin cells. (Let that soak in for a moment.) The body is an intricate system constantly creating new cells and shedding the old—we’re talking about a loss of around 30,000 to 40,000 old skin cells each day! At that rate, the skin you see on your body now will be gone in around a month. Pretty crazy, huh?FACT #2: SKIN CELLS CHANGE SHAPEIt’s true! According to the AAD, skin cells start off looking fat and square. Over time, they move to the top of the epidermis and flatten out as they go. Once these cells reach the surface, they begin to flake off.FACT #3: SUN DAMAGE IS THE MAIN CAUSE OF SKIN AGINGYes, you read that correctly. Research shows that an estimated 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun. This is part of the reason why we urge you to protect your skin against harmful UV rays regardless of the season!
