The Complete Guide to Men's Winter Skin Care
Harsh winds. Brutally cold temps. Artificial heat. These hallmarks of winter can spell disaster for your skin. And since we’re already in the midst of it all, there’s no turning back. What you can do, however, is make sure your skin is equipped to fight back against the elements. Don’t know where to begin? There’s way more to men’s winter skin care than liberally applying moisturizer to beat the drying effects of near-freezing temperatures. Below, we’re sharing essential winter skin care tips to follow to ensure your skin makes it through the cold season unharmed and looking its best.
TIP #1: CLEANSE YOUR SKIN
Some cleansers can strip your skin of moisture, but that’s no excuse to skip the ritual altogether. Your skin comes into contact with pollution, dirt, and impurities every day, which—if left on your skin’s surface—can end up wreaking havoc in the form of breakouts. In order to thoroughly remove the grime from the surface of your skin before they clog your pores, be sure to cleanse your skin morning and night. Reach for a gentle, cream-based cleanser that can hydrate your skin (instead of stripping much-needed moisture) while removing unwanted impurities. We recommend the La-Roche Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cream Cleanser. This cream cleanser gently impurities without over-drying, making it the perfect addition to your winter routine. The cleanser has a soothing, creamy texture that moisturizes and soothes your skin. It’s suitable for combination to oily, sensitive skin types.
If you’re a gym buff, make sure to cleanse your skin immediately after working up a sweat if you can’t shower right away. You can do so with your favorite cleanser, with cleansing face wipes, or with a no-rinse cleanser. Store them in your gym bag for easy access.
TIP #2: EXFOLIATE WEEKLY
One of the biggest skin complaints of winter, aside from dryness, is a dulled appearance. Often times the reason for dull-looking skin has to do with a buildup of dead skin cells on the surface which prohibit the light from reflecting off the skin. Put your best face forward by sloughing away those dead cells. Baxter of Calfornia’s Facial Scrub utilizes cornmeal and walnut shell powder to gently scrub away impurities and dead cells.
TIP #3: MOISTURIZE OFTEN
Moisturizer is extremely important year-round, and especially in the winter. It’s one of the best ways to avoid dry skin. What’s more, moisturizing daily can plump the look of your skin, and in turn reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. For best results, apply moisturizer while your skin is slightly damp.
During the day, reach for a moisturizer that boasts sun protection benefits, like Kiehl’s Facial Fuel SPF 15. Stay consistent with your SPF protection (reapplying at least every two hours), since sun damage can still occur when it’s cold out. Remember, just because you can’t see the sun, doesn’t mean it’s not there. At night, turn to a moisturizer with anti-aging benefits, like the Biotherm Homme Force Supreme Youth Architect Cream. The formula acts of all visible signs of aging, and can give your skin the hydration it needs prior to snoozing.
TIP #4: SHOWER WITH LUKEWARM WATER
When it’s cold out, we all enjoy taking steamy hot showers to warm up. While it feels good on our skin, water that’s too hot can actually strip the skin of natural oils, causing your skin to become dry. Opt for lukewarm showers that are shorter in length.
TIP #5: MIND YOUR SHAVING
If your skin is prone to razor bumps or burns, it’s more than likely you’re shaving incorrectly. After cleansing, apply a soothing and hydrating shaving cream like Baxter of California’s Super Close Shave Formula. Using short strokes, glide your razor in the direction of hair growth. Rinse with lukewarm water before the next stroke and steer clear from going over any areas more than once. Once you’ve completed shaving, follow up with a soothing aftershave balm like L’Oreal Paris’ Hydra Energetic After Shave Balm.
TIP #6: CONDITION YOUR LIPS
The skin on your lips is thin and delicate, making it more susceptible to drying out. The bitter cold winds of winter won’t make matters any easier. Stock up on your favorite lip balm or emollient and use it liberally throughout the day. We recommend La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Lip Stick. It’s anti-drying, and boasts broad spectrum SPF 50 to protect your lips from the sun as well.
TIP #7: DON’T SKIP DEODORANT
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you should be skipping deodorant. The right formula will not only keep away any unwanted stench but also condition your skin. Try Baxter of California’s Deodorant. The aluminum-free deodorant tackles odor as it detoxifies and conditions the skin. The clear solid gel formula includes tea tree and witch hazel extracts to tone and disinfect while comfrey, yarrow, and chamomile extracts soothe and hydrate.
TIP #8: USE A FACE MASK
Men need to use a face mask every now and then, too. Particularly in the winter, your skin is in need of a little extra TLC—and face mask is the perfect solution for that. Use a mask that has an ultra-hydrating formula to combat that winter dryness. We recommend the L’Oréal Paris Pure-Clay Clear & Comfort Face Mask. This indulgent and transformative mask is formulated with pure clays and seaweed to provide a luxurious experience while helping comfort stressed skin. The creamy formula gently yet effectively cleanses to leave skin clean and clear.
TIP #9: GRAB A BEARD OIL
Think your beard isn’t part of your skin care routine? Think again. Using a beard oil will not only nourish your beard during this cold, drying time of year, it will also nourish the skin beneath. Try the Kiehl’s Grooming Solutions Nourishing Beard Grooming Oil. Whether you have light scruff or a full beard, this lightweight beard oil smoothens facial hair and nourishes the skin underneath. The formula is infused with essential oils including Sandalwood, Cedarwood, and Eucalyptus.
TIP #10: USE A FACE SERUM
A face serum is a great way to keep your skin looking smooth, hydrated, and youthful. We love Lancôme’s Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Serum. This fast-acting anti-aging serum works to improve skin's key signs of youth: radiance, elasticity, firmness, skin tone, and smoothness. The serum has a patented formula, which contains Bifidus extract, that can help strengthen and protect your skin's moisture barrier.
TIP #11: APPLY BODY BUTTER
As your body starts to become a victim of cold weather—which we all have to face this time of year—your regular body lotion may not cut it. Instead, give your skin the extra nourishment and hydration it needs by using a body butter, like Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter. The body butter is luxuriously scented, light on the skin, and provides rich 24-hour hydration. The decadently air-whipped formula instantly penetrates to restore, protect, and soften your skin.
TIP #12: DON’T FORGET BODY WASH
Another essential step for winter skin care is to use a hydrating body wash. Just like your face can become dry during the winter months, your body can also be a victim of cold weather. Try Baxter of California’s Invigorating Body Wash 16 Oz - Citrus & Herbal Musk. The mild, plant-derived formula removes impurities without stripping moisture while vitamin E and jojoba oil hydrate and condition to leave your skin feeling soft, clean, and renewed.
TIP #13: HYDRATE YOUR LIPS
‘Tis the season for finding yourself beneath the mistletoe, which means you’ll want to keep your lips hydrated and looking their best. To help avoid dry lips, use a moisturizing lip mask, like Kiehl’s Buttermask for Lips. This intensively hydrating lip mask, infused with fairly traded coconut oil and wild mango butter, helps restore dry lips overnight. To use, simply apply a generous layer at bedtime.
TIP #14: GIVE YOUR EYES SOME ATTENTION
Last but certainly not least, you want to give the delicate skin around your eyes some extra TLC during this weathering season. Add an eye cream into your daily routine—bonus points if you use one that can give you a more youthful-looking appearance, like the L’Oréal Paris Men Expert Hydra-Energetic Ice Cold Eye Roller. This eye cream is formulated with vitamin C and caffeine to give your eyes a refreshing wake-up call while dissolving signs of fatigue like dark under-eye circles and puffiness. With an easy, hands-free applicator, the lightweight serum is the perfect addition to your winter skin care regimen.
