How to Help Soothe a Sensitive Scalp

Find the Trigger

The first step in helping a sensitive scalp is determining the trigger. Think back to your usual hair and scalp routine. Did you recently switch shampoos, introduce a new hair product, or take a shower with higher-than-usual water temps? Any sudden changes to your regular regimen could be the culprit.

Check the Label

If you color your hair, do a patch test on your skin to see if the product reacts to your skin prior to using it. If there’s any irritation, try a different brand. In general, it’s wise to steer clear of products formulated with alcohol or other ingredients that could react to sensitive skin so be sure to check product labels.

Get Sensitive-Specific

Try using a shampoo specifically formulated for sensitive skin that is mild and fragrance-free and rinsing thoroughly! Consider cutting back on some of your heavy, alcohol-based hair products, and applying coconut oil to help keep your scalp hydrated.

Lower the Heat

If you blow-dry your hair every day, try limiting it to a few times per week. Excessive heat may exacerbate the irritation on a sensitive scalp.

With so many different factors—it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what’s causing your sensitivity. If it persists, talk to your dermatologist about the best treatment plan.
