5 Dermatologist-Approved Anti-Aging Ingredients

From reducing fine lines and wrinkles to brightening the appearance of dark spots to restoring radiance to an otherwise dull complexion, there’s a product for nearly everything. But when it comes to these signs of aging skin, we think it’s important to forget the gimmicks, look pass the promises, and go straight to the source—and by source we mean a top dermatologist. To find out which ingredients were absolute anti-aging must-haves, we turned to board-certified dermatologist, and Skincare.com expert, Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali.

Anti-Aging Must-Have #1: Broad-Spectrum SPF

“Everything begins with SPF. It’s the single most powerful anti-aging ingredient out there and, aside from the obvious cancer preventing benefit, it significantly reduces the onset of wrinkles and age spots. You should ideally start with an SPF 30 or higher with your daily moisturizer and an SPF of 50 if you hit the beach this summer.”

Anti-Aging Must-Have #2: Retinol

Retinol—a form of vitamin A—is the holy grail of dermatology ingredients. It acts as a powerful anti-aging ingredient. It can help increase cell turnover and remove debris from the surface of your skin—almost like a superficial chemical peel! It helps to improve the look of wrinkles and even minimize the appearance of scars. Bottom line…everyone should use it.”

Anti-Aging Must-Have #3: Antioxidants

“Free radicals are generated from environmental exposure and can significantly harm your skin if not neutralized,” Bhanusali shares. His favorite way to offset this damage? Antioxidants. “My favorites are vitamin C, vitamin E, and green tea.”

Anti-Aging Must-Have #4: Alpha Hydroxy Acids

“Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) like glycolic acids are wonderful exfoliators. They remove debris and pollutants from the surface of skin and keep your skin healthy-looking and glowing. I generally recommend using AHAs two to three times per week as part of your anti-aging plan. I have patients alternate them with hydrating cleansers, which can help prime the skin for better absorption of topical ingredients.”

Anti-Aging Must-Have #5: Argan Oil

“One of my new favorite things to recommend is Argan oil as a facial serum or mask once or twice per week at night before bed—let it seep in while you sleep. The oil is an incredible hydrator and keeps the skin soft and supple.”
