The signs of skin aging don’t stop at the face. In fact, with time, some of the premature signs of aging—read: fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, loose, saggy skin, and more—that you may experience on your face can also extend down to the skin below it. The good news is with a few tips and tricks—and stellar skin care products—there are ways you can help to keep the skin on your body looking younger longer. Learn how to create an anti-aging skin care routine for the body below.
REACH FOR A BODY LOTION…OFTEN
As we get older our skin can begin to lose moisture and become dull-looking, dehydrated, and dry. This lack of hydration needs to be met with frequent use of body lotions, creams, or butters—pick your poison! Every day when you hop out of the shower, pat—don’t rub—yourself dry, and while the skin is still slightly damp apply the body moisturizer of your choice in gentle upward circular motions, the same way you’d apply moisturizer to the skin on your face.
NEVER… EVER… SKIP OUT ON SPF
If there’s one non-negotiable when it comes to an anti-aging skin care routine—whether it’s the skin on your face or body—it’s applying and reapplying a product with broad-spectrum SPF. From skin cancer to wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots, there can be major consequences for going out in the sun unprotected. When applying SPF to your complexion in the morning, consider the areas of your body that will be exposed to sunlight and apply sunscreen there. And while you’re at it, keep a travel-sized bottle of body sunscreen in your purse—along with your face sunscreen—to reapply throughout the day as needed. Your skin (from head to toe!) will thank you for it.
SELF-TANNER OR BUST
While we’re not advocates of getting a tan by baking under the sun, it’s no secret that tanned skin looks amazing. You know the saying: “If you can’t tone it…tan it!” But instead of subjecting your skin to the aging effects of UV rays in the name of a golden glow, reach for self-tanning products. Self-tanner can help create the illusion of bronzed skin, without the negative side effects of the sun’s damaging UV rays. We share the ultimate step-by-step guide to help you get a great faux glow here! Just don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your gams before heading out the door.
CORRECTION
Just like you would apply a dark spot correcting serum to the spots on your complexion, try applying a correcting serum to the dark spots on your body, too. Skin correcting serums that are formulated to reduce the appearance of dark spots can result in more youthful-looking body skin. One of our favorite places to use these serums or lotions is on our hands and chests where dark spots are more likely to appear.
MIX IT UP WITH AN ANTI-AGING SERUM
Take your hydration game to the next level by mixing a few drops of your favorite antioxidant-rich anti-aging facial serum into your body moisturizer and massaging into the skin post-shower or bath. Antioxidants can help to neutralize free radicals and protect the skin from environmental skin aggressors. What’s more? They can help to brighten the appearance of dull-looking skin and promote a youthful-looking glow.
KISS DRY SKIN GOODBYE
Another side effect of aging skin? Dry, dead skin cell buildup that leaves the skin looking anything but radiant. But, luckily, with weekly body exfoliation, you can be well on your way to more radiant-looking skin. Once or twice a week, reach for an invigorating body scrub to help slough away some of that dull-looking dead skin cell buildup and reveal softer, smoother, more radiant-looking skin that was hidden underneath.
GIVE YOUR HANDS SOME LOVE
Did you know that the skin on your hands is one of the first areas on your body to show signs of aging? It’s true! Luckily, with a little extra love and care, you can help ward off these premature signs of aging for as long as possible. From correcting dark spots to hand cream to exfoliating the dry, dead skin buildup away, we share an anti-aging hand care routine to try, here.
