DIY Citrus Salt Scrub to Awaken Your Senses

Is your skin looking and feeling dry, cracked, and rough? It may be time to exfoliate. You could spend a pretty penny on a fancy scrub, or you could make one yourself with ingredients likely already sitting in your pantry. The perk of the latter option is that you can customize your scrub however you want—from scent to texture—which simply can’t be said for the store-bought varieties. Best of all, it takes under 10 minutes to whip together! Go ahead and treat yourself—or whip up a jar to gift to friends and loved ones. Here’s what you’ll need:

INGREDIENTS

  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • ¼ cup granulated salt
  • ½ teaspoon of lemon essential oil
  • ½ teaspoon of sweet orange essential oil
  • ¼ teaspoon raw honey

Let’s talk about the ingredients for a moment, since they all serve a particular purpose in this scrub. Coconut oil has a slew of skin care benefits, including its incredible ability to moisturize skin. Pair that with honey—a natural humectant—and you’ve got a recipe (literally) for intense hydration. The salt is the exfoliating mechanism in this scrub that helps slough off dead skin cells from skin’s surface gently. We love the combination of lemon and sweet orange essential oils too; they awaken the senses and are wonderfully addicting.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together. (Tip: If you want your scrub to have a coarser, sand-like texture, mix in a few more handfuls of salt during this step.)
  2. Store the scrub in an airtight jar.
  3. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes.

When ready to use, massage in circular motions as desired onto your body while in the bath or shower. Rinse and pat dry. Follow up with an application of your favorite moisturizer or lotion while skin is still damp to help lock in moisture. Voila—smooth, kissable skin you’ll want to touch all day.

SHELF LIFE

Keep the scrub refrigerated and use it within a few months. Consider making smaller batches that’ll be used up quickly. If your scrub looks or smells rancid at any point, dispose of it immediately and create a new batch.
