Can You Get Rid of Dark Circles and Under-Eye Bags on Men’s Skin?

Men, take note: Dark circles and under-eye bags can appear at any moment, and are never fun to deal with. From skipping sleep to plain ol’ genetics, The Mayo Clinic reports that your under-eye skin can go from bright and smooth to dark and droopy thanks to a long list of causes. Even if you have the strictest of skin care regimens, dark circles and under-eye bags can still appear.
Dark, puffy under-eyes can make you look much older and tired than you truly are, and they linger for much longer than you’d expect. While there are ways to help reduce the appearance of dark circles, is there any way to actually get rid of these pesky problems? Many eye creams and products can help, but is there a way to zap our under-eyes back into their youthful-looking state for good?
We know you’ve been asking and hunting for the answer, and now we’re finally serving you the truth you’ve been waiting for. We chatted with plastic surgeon, SkinCeuticals ambassador, and Skincare.com consultant Dr. Peter Schmid. Ahead, he tells us once and for all if there is an actual way to get rid of under-eye bags and dark circles for men.

How Are Dark Circles & Under Eye Bags Formed?
Before we dive into the question at hand, first we should take a look at the different causes of dark circles and under eye bags for men. “The causes of under eye circles and bags are variable and require a thorough clinical examination and professional plan to address the specific problem,” says Dr. Schmid. “Causes may include facial swelling, poor diet, allergies, fatigue and stress, dehydration, weight loss, sinusitis (or other medical conditions), genetics or aging of the surrounding soft tissues.”

Can You Get Rid of Dark Circles & Under Eye Bags?
Here comes the answer you’ve been waiting for. According to Dr. Schmid, there are ways that men can help improve the appearance of their dark circles and under-eye bags. That said, it will take a bit of effort and likely won’t stick without a consistent, targeted routine. While Dr. Schmid states that simple factors such as rest, relaxation, and rehydration can help with improving your general under-eye appearance problems, he also noted that there are certain ways to assist with more specific concerns. We list a few of his top tips, ahead.

How to Address Dehydrated Under Eyes
When it comes to dehydrated, paper-thin skin, Dr. Schmid recommends moisturizing to quench your dry under eyes. “Skin that is dehydrated, crepe-papery, or thinning responds exceptionally well to moisturizers such as SkinCeuticals Eye Balm or A.G.E. Eye Complex,” says Dr. Schmid. Eye Balm is specially formulated to counter the visible effects of moisture loss, collagen breakdown, and free radical damage around the delicate eye area. A.G.E. Eye Complex is an advanced anti-wrinkle cream that can help improve the appearance of puffiness, dark circles and the effects of glycation.

How to Address Pigmentation
If you suffer from under-eye pigmentation, there are quite a few options for you to choose from, according to Dr. Schmid. “Pigmentation problems such as sun spots respond well to pigment lightening skin care products, or non-surgical options like intense pulsed light therapy, chemical peels, and resurfacing lasers,” says Dr. Schmid. Talk to your skin care professional for the best course of action.

3 Tips to Help Address Dark Circles & Under-Eye Bags for Men
If you’re looking for some more quick aides to help reduce the look of your under-eye bags and dark circles, you’re in luck. Dr. Schmid confessed his best hacks and tips to help brighten the appearance of your under-eye skin for a youthful look.

Tip #1: Manage Your Diet
For younger-looking under eyes, fixing up your diet could help. “Reduction of alcohol intake, dietary sugars, and salty foods may reduce lower eyelid puffiness or swelling,” Dr. Schmid suggests.

Tip #2: Keep Your Allergies in Check
Your under-eye concerns could be a sign of allergies. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology, inflammation is a known allergy symptom, and should be taken care of accordingly. “Antihistamines or immunotherapy serve a purpose for seasonal allergy afflictions,” Dr. Schmid says.

Tip #3: Protect Against UV Rays
One of the biggest tips on this list is to always guard your skin from the sun. While it’s fun to roam out and about on sunny days, your skin is extremely sensitive to the sun’s UV rays and should always stay protected with broad-spectrum sunscreen, according to Dr. Schmid. Even if there are clouds above, UV rays can damage your skin, so always keep your skin protected with broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapply at least every two hours. For further protection around your eyes, invest in a visor or wide-brimmed hat.
Need a sunscreen rec? Dr. Schmid recommends keeping your skin guarded on a daily basis with the SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical Fusion. It’s a broad spectrum SPF 50 formula that contains a UVA/UVB protective fluid, and works to enhance your natural skin tone with its universal tint. To give your under-eyes an extra boost of sun protection, pair the Sheer Physical Fusion with the SkinCeuticals Physical Eye Defense, which acts as a non-migrating protective eye base with its broad spectrum SPF 50 formula. Pairing these two products together can give your skin the protection and extra TLC it deserves.
