The Skincare Products You Shouldn’t Put in the Fridge

There are a variety of benefits when it comes to storing your products in a skincare fridge — it makes them extra cooling, soothing and makes your routine that much more aesthetically pleasing. It is important to note, however, that not all skincare products are meant to be stored at cool temps in the fridge due to the risk of formula separation, or worse, bacterial growth. Ahead, we tapped board-certified dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Houshmand to share which items to avoid storing in your fridge.

What Should You Avoid Putting in Your Skincare Fridge?

According to Dr. Houshmand, there are a few distinct products you should keep far away from your skincare fridge: oil-based products, cream emollients and clay masks are the heavy hitters.

“Because water and oil separate, you want to be extra careful with oil-based products like facial oils,” she says. “You may find that the formula and texture might change into a watery liquid if you place it in a fridge.” Clay masks also change consistency when exposed to cold; they can harden and become difficult to use, Dr. Houshmand says. 

Instead, Dr. Houshmand recommends storing oils, emollients and clay masks at room temperature. “Keep oils away from direct sunlight to also protect them from oxidizing,” she adds.

What’s the Safest Way to Store Products in Your Skincare Fridge?

To ensure that all of your products stay fresh even when stored in your fridge, keep them at 45-50 degrees F. “This temperature range maintains the consistency of products and helps decrease the risk of growth of bacteria, mold and yeast,” says Dr. Houshmand. It can also decrease the risk of deactivation of active ingredients.
