Have you ever taken off your sports bra (or a pair of fitted shorts, or a face mask) and suddenly been greeted by a group of angry red pimples festering underneath? It could be acne mechanica, according to Dr. Dendy Engelman, a Skincare.com consulting board-certified dermatologist based in NYC. “Acne mechanica is a breakout that occurs as a result of excessive heat, sweat, friction and pressure on the skin,” she says.” To learn more about this skin condition, keep reading.

How is acne mechanica different from other types of acne?

“While other forms of acne are usually caused by underlying hormonal changes or genetics, acne mechanica is directly caused by external or ‘mechanical’ means,” says Dr. Engelman.

How can you prevent acne mechanica?

One of the best ways to help prevent acne mechanica in the first place is by minimizing friction on the skin, says Dr. Engelman. This means avoiding any skin coverings or bandages. Dr. Engelman also recommends washing your hands often, avoiding touching your face, and wearing loose clothing.

You should also try to keep the skin clean.  We like a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, such as the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser. You can also swipe on a toner to remove excess oil and skin cell buildup on the skin’s surface. We recommend the Kiehl’s Daily Milk-Peel Gentle Exfoliating Toner, which contains lipo-hydroxy acid to gently slough away dead skin and almond milk to help maintain the skin’s moisture levels.

If you think you might have acne mechanica, consult your dermatologist to diagnose and recommend treatment options.
