A Glow-Inducing Facial Massage to Add to Your Skin-Care Routine
Glowy skin is high up on our list of skin goals — right next to achieving an even skin tone and blemish-free complexion. Just like every other skin-care lover, we choose products in hopes that with diligent use, we’ll be able to happily cross off our skin goals in the near future. But something we don’t often think about are DIY ways of reaching said goals. Take facial massages, for example — a.k.a., another way to jump-start our glowy-skin potential. Paired with products formulated to make your skin look brighter, the combination is certainly worth testing at home.
We reached out to Skincare.com consultant, LeeAnne Leslie, Professional Education Manager of Alpha-H Skin Care, who recommends incorporating a facial massage into your usual skin-care regimen once a week. “The results will vary depending on factors such as your skin type and concerns, but we would anticipate both immediate glow and longer-term results after a month of weekly facial massage,” she explains. In addition, Leslie cites that at-home facial massage has a range of benefits that extend beyond radiant looking skin, including “removing visible signs of tension from the skin, increasing circulation and helping to address visible puffiness.”
As for how you should go about the DIY facial massage, she recommends starting with a thoroughly cleansed face with the help of a hydrating, non-foaming cleanser. We like CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, as it’s an affordable option that leaves our skin clean and moisturized. “Apply a little of your favorite nourishing facial oil to clean hands and warm gently between the fingertips,” she says. “Next, place fingertips gently at the temples and take three deep breaths to begin. This sets your intention and ensures you are relaxed and ready to receive the facial massage.
“Apply the oil to the skin in gentle sweeping movements, starting from the center of the face working outward and upward. There are no set massage movements you must follow except for gentle circular movements along the forehead and jawline. Repeat these movements three times flowing over the face. Use your index finger to perform gentle pressure point movements around the orbital bone and across the eyebrows. Repeat three times. Finally, apply either a facial mask or hydrating moisturizer to finish.”
And if you’re wondering what products you’ll need to pick up for your facial (other than that hydrating cleanser), Leslie recommends a specialized serum formulated for your skin type. “These may be massaged gently into the skin to assist with penetration. Facial masks are also ideal to use post-facial massage as the skin’s blood and lymphatic circulation have been stimulated, making the skin receptive to further treatment products.”
