Our Editors Share The Best Beauty Gift They've Ever Received
When it comes to gifts, they say it’s the thought that counts. And when it comes to some gifts, they count in our thoughts for years after we’ve received them. Below, Skincare.com editors share the best beauty gifts they’ve ever received, the ones that have held a special place within their hearts (and their beauty regimens) to this day.
A GIFT-WITH-PURCHASE MAKEUP KIT
“I've spent the better part of the past decade as a beauty editor, which often comes with lots of gifts and freebies. And it's great, don't get me wrong—it's really great. But, when I think back on the beauty gifts I've received that hold a special place in my heart, my mind naturally goes to the gifts-with-purchase my mom would give to me each holiday season after she would buy her perfume.
My mom has a signature scent. She's worn it my entire life and when I was growing up the brand that makes said perfume would come out with an amazing gift-with-purchase makeup kit that she would always give to me. One year it was essentially a giant Caboodle—but like, faux leather-encased and super-luxe feeling for a teenager—and it was filled with lipsticks and eyeshadows and blush. I was in Heaven. The amount of Myspace profile photos taken with me in a full face of this stuff brings me a great deal of embarrassment today, but, at the time, it made me feel truly beautiful during a time in my life I wasn't so sure I was. If that's not a true beauty gift, I don't know what is. I brought that case with me to college and it still sits on my vanity, today, nearly 20 years later.”

A MAKEUP SET FOR BEGINNER’S
“My passion for beauty really began with using my Mom’s makeup and skin care products. Too young to purchase products on my own, I would sneak into my Mom’s cabinets when she wasn’t around and stick my fingers into everything. She very soon caught on, realizing that her beauty products were dwindling away at a much faster rate than usual. In hindsight, sharing makeup brushes with my Mom was a pretty bad idea. (She started to break out because of it—sorry Mom!) To keep me things more sanitary, my Mom bought me a box of my very own makeup brushes along with an eyeshadow palette, foundation, and face powder. That was all I needed—plus a few YouTube tutorials—to start teaching myself how to apply makeup without using her stash.”

A PERSONAL SKIN CARE SET…IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE
“The best beauty gift I’ve ever received is a Chanel skin care set. The set featured lotions, concealer, perfume, and a body cream, and was packaged in the most beautiful soft pink color. My Mom gave it to me for my 16th birthday because I kept stealing hers from the cabinet. She's always been a luxurious woman—and I've always looked up to how she holds herself together no matter what—so this was an extremely personal gift for me that I'll always remember.”

A WONDERFULLY-SCENTED PERFUME
“A lot of the appeal in perfumes has to do with their packaging, but their scent is what ultimately seals the deal. Growing up, I remember staring at the Jean-Paul Gaultier perfume in my mom’s beauty cabinet. It was (and still is) is in the shape of a woman wearing lace and flowers. It looked so pretty and refined, and seemed like something only grown-ups were allowed to wear. This sense of refinement and beauty was confirmed in its scent, which she would spritz on each time there was a special occasion.
When I was around 20 years-old, I unwrapped one gift to find the signature tin inside. My mom had given me my very own bottle of the Jean-Paul Gaultier Classique. It was like I had earned my place as a classy lady, right up there with my mom. It’s a scent I use mostly during the winter, or whenever I need a fabulous pick-me-up.”

A LUXE FOUNDATION
“Since I was about 13 years old, I never trusted anyone to get Christmas presents for me. I always had to try something out in person before I bought it, so I didn't want someone to get me something that I would end up hating. However, when I was 16 my mother got me my first-ever Sephora gift card. With the gift card, I ended up buying a foundation that I still re-purchase to this day—the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. It worked wonders on my skin, and made me the most confident 16-year-old anyone has ever seen.”
