We all want skin that exudes radiance (think: a dewy, glowing complexion without the assistance of highlighter) but between seasonal transitions, daily stress, and a host of other factors completely out of our control, our skin can often appear dull and lackluster. That’s not even taking into account poor sleeping habits and lifestyle choices that can affect our skin’s appearance. And while adopting a proper skin care routine can help reverse some of these unwanted side effects, they won’t be a saving grace all on their own. To really pinpoint the cause of your ruddy skin appearance, you’ll have to dig deep and analyze the full picture. Lucky for you, there are some simple skin care steps and A+ lifestyle habits you can take on for your skin to appear more radiant, and we’re sharing them all, ahead! Brighten up the appearance of your complexion with these tips, and a few recommended products, on how to get glowing skin.
TIP #1: PROTECT AGAINST UV RAYS
The sun’s powerful UV rays are nothing to joke about. They can wreak serious havoc on your skin if you don’t take the necessary precautions to protect against them. And just what do we mean by “wreak havoc”? UV rays can cause everything from sunburns to fine lines and dark spots, so wearing SPF year-round is necessary to help to avoid sun damage.
Maintain your skin’s glow and keep it safe from UV damage by protecting it from the effects of the sun’s harmful rays with day creams and moisturizers formulated with SPF. One of our favorites? Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 30. This lightweight formula is readily absorbed into the skin, leaving it feeling soft, nurtured, and smooth. Plus, it’s broad spectrum SPF protection provides a line of defense against damaging UVA and UVB rays.
Editor’s note: There’s currently no sunscreen on the market that can fully protect your skin against harmful UV rays. As such, be sure to apply Broad Spectrum SPF 15 or higher daily, and reapply at least every two hours AND take additional precautionary measures. This can include wearing protective clothing, seeking shake, and avoiding peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) when the rays are strongest.
TIP #2: TURN DOWN THE HEAT
When the temperatures drop, it’s likely you crank up the heat in not just your home, but in your shower as well. But did you know that your skin’s frequent exposure to excess heat can cause it to dry out? It’s true! Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, subsequently drying it out and causing a dull-looking complexion. The American Skin Association suggests turning down the heat and using lukewarm water in order to avoid the drying effects. As soon as you get out of the shower, gently pat yourself dry and apply a moisturizer to help keep skin hydrated.
Need a facial moisturizer rec? Try Garnier SkinActive Moisture Bomb The Antioxidant Super Moisturizer with goji berry and hyaluronic acid. This non-greasy, gel-based formula floods the skin with long-lasting hydration for softer, healthier-looking skin. It’s rich with antioxidants and vitamins c and e, and helps strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier to stop the cycle of dry skin. After one use, your skin will feel more hydrated and appear more youthful day after day.
TIP #3: MAINTAIN A HEALTHY DIET
If you’re anything like us, you often get so caught up in your skin care routine that you forget there are other factors that can contribute to a dull complexion. One of those very factors? Our diets. Believe it or not, it’s as important to focus on what you’re putting into your body as what you’re layering onto it. A well-rounded diet, rich in antioxidants, omega-3s, and other healthy fats—like those found in avocados and nuts—will not only help you maintain a healthy lifestyle, but can also have a positive effect on the appearance of your skin. With a little extra attentiveness and diligence, a more radiant, dewy complexion is just within arm’s reach!
TIP #4: EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN
Exfoliation—as long as your skin’s not too sensitive—is a great addition to your weekly skin care routine. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, by removing the top layer of dead skin cells, your skin can look brighter and more radiant. Depending on your preference and skin type, you can choose between gentle exfoliating scrubs to manually remove dead skin or chemically dissolve the build up with at-home products that use gentle acids.
For an exfoliating scrub, try Garnier SkinActive Clean+ Invigorating Daily Scrub with peppermint and jojoba beads. Formulated for normal skin types, this daily exfoliating formula deeply cleanses the skin, gently refines pores, and instantly energizes for a healthier look. Within one use, the skin is deeply cleansed and smoothed, and within one week, skin is softened, and looks healthy and revitalized. For best results, massage Clean+ Daily Invigorating Scrub on to damp face and rinse thoroughly.
Prefer a chemical exfoliator instead? Look for formulas with acids like glycolic or salicylic acid, which can help dissolve the buildup of dead skin on the skin’s surface without the harshness typically associated with rough grains or beads. Keep in mind, however, that chemical exfoliators and peels are not for everyone. Consider your skin type before selection a formula, and consult your dermatologist prior to use.
TIP #5: USE A SERUM
An illuminating serum can do wonders to help your skin glow. Serums not only help with giving your skin a radiant sheen, but they can also target specific skin issues, making them a handy product for just about anyone. Whether you’re looking to target discoloration, signs of aging, or dryness, there’s a serum out there that can help.
One of our favorite serums is the Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate for its revitalizing formula that gives your skin a glowing finish while fighting the visible signs of skin fatigue.
TIP #6: FIX YOUR SLEEP SCHEDULE
If you truly want naturally glowing skin, then sleep will be your best friend. A bad sleep schedule has been proven to not only dull the look of your skin, but to increase signs of aging and diminish your skin’s barrier function. If you’re a chronically poor sleeper, then you’re not doing any favors for your skin. TIP #7: CARE FOR YOUR SKIN’S MICROBIOME
Did you know that your skin is covered in trillions of microscopic bacteria? When you hear the word bacteria and skin, your mind may conjure up photos of infections or cystic acne but the truth is not all bacteria is bad. Your skin’s microbiome is home to “good” bacteria that are friendly and actually support skin health. According to board-certified dermatologist, and Skincare.com consultant, Dr. Whitney Bowe, it’s imperative that you take care of these bugs and your skin’s microbiome in order to achieve long-term solutions in the skin and, more specifically, skin that glows from the inside out and the outside in.
But how exactly can you care for these skin-friendly microorganisms? Dr. Bowe’s first piece of advice is to eat right. You want to cut out things that have refined carbs and lots of sugars in them,” she says. “Processed, packaged foods are usually not very skin friendly.” Her second piece of advice is to not scrub your skin excessively while cleansing or use excessively harsh products. “Any time that your skin feels really tight and dry and squeaky clean after cleansing, it probably means that you’re killing off some of your good bugs,” she warns. And lastly, Dr. Bowe recommends using products formulated with prebiotics, which can actually feed the bacteria on the skin and create a healthy microbiome.
Try La Roche-Posay Lipikar Baume AP+. This body moisturizer for dry skin features a unique prebiotic action on the skin’s microbiome. It’s formulated with the brand’s Prebiotic Thermal Water, shea butter, glycerin, and niacinamide, and is clinically-shown to help reduce dry, rough skin.
TIP #8: USE HIGHLIGHTER
If all else fails, then fake it ‘til you make it. Using a facial highlighter can give your skin that shimmering glow in just a few swipes. It truly doesn’t get any easier than that.
While we love a cool, cosmic highlight color, sometimes we want a more natural finish. That’s when we reach for the NYX Professional Makeup Born To Glow Highlight Palette. The palette boasts six shimmering shades that all stay within a natural tone, making it one of the best faux glows you’ll ever lay your eyes on.
