What the Heck Is a Skin-Care Essence?
Looking for an easy way to enhance your skin-care routine without having to invest in a bunch of new products? Add an essence! Essence waters are making waves in the skin-care world for good reason. These hydrating solutions are great additions to your current routine, helping to prep your skin for the moisturizing steps in your regimen. While for a long time an essence was only available overseas, in recent years more and more brands have been creating them, including one of our favorites by Vichy. We’re sharing more about Vichy’s Essence Water — and how to include it in your skin-care routine — below.
What Is Essence?
Essences are like the primers of your skin-care routine — like primer preps your complexion for foundation application, essence preps it for hydrators like serum and moisturizer. While you can find essence formulas in a variety of textures, including oil and gel, we’re partial to essence water as it’s so lightweight.
Vichy Aqualia Thermal Essence Water
Vichy’s Aqualia Thermal Essence Water is a skin-care enhancer that instantly elevates your skin-care routine with a burst of hydration. Ideal for dry skin, it provides your complexion with an extra layer of hydration while preparing it for serums and moisturizer. Vichy’s paraben-free Essence Water is formulated with hyaluronic acid — a humectant that holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water — and Vichy’s exclusive mineralizing thermal water, which is rich in 15 rare minerals and sourced from the French volcanoes. It can be used as part of any skin-care routine, making it a great fit for just about everyone.
How to Use an Essence
To use essence water, you’ll want to start with a clean canvas. Reach for your favorite facial cleanser — we love using a no-rinse cleanser like micellar water — and thoroughly cleanse your skin of makeup, dirt and other impurities lingering on the surface. Next, reach for your essence water. Distribute a small amount onto your fingertips and gently press the product onto your skin. After it’s dry, follow up with your go-to serum and moisturizer — and if it's daytime, end with a layer of broad-spectrum sunscreen.
