Editor's Pick: Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution Review
We know a few things to be true about dark spots. Number one: They can be caused by a number of factors—more on that later—including age and genetics. Number two: Many people—the Skincare.com team included!—don’t like the way they cluster on a complexion, making skin appear dull, aged, and uneven in tone. And last but not least, number three: The stubborn marks can be very difficult to fade…but not impossible! That’s where Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution comes in. We were recently sent over a complimentary sample of Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution to review, and let’s just say we know one more thing to be true: We absolutely love it! Ahead, we’re sharing our review of the Kiehl’s dark spot corrector, its benefits, how to use it, and more.
Common Causes of Dark Spots
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of our Kiehl’s dark spot corrector review, it’s important to understand why dark spots can crop up in the first place. Below, we’re laying out a few common causes of dark spots on skin.
Age: Age spots—also called liver spots and solar lentigines—are flat tan, brown, or black spots. They vary in size and usually appear on areas of skin most exposed to the sun, like the face, hands, shoulders, and arms. According to the Mayo Clinic, age spots are very common in adults over 50.
Sun Exposure: Speaking of sun exposure, you may love the way your skin looks with a tanned glow, but you’ll likely find issue with the dark spots that can appear after prolonged periods of unprotected sun exposure. They can also creep up on you later in life, so don’t take those SPF applications lightly.
Genetics: Thank Mom and Dad for this one! Pigmentation in your skin can differ due to genetics.
Pollution: According to a recent study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, chronic exposure to traffic-related air pollution can also be a culprit of dark spots. The findings of this study showed that exposure to nitrogen dioxide was significantly associated with more dark spots on the cheeks, but even more evident on the cheeks of women exposed to more polluted air. For more information on the possible connection between air pollution and dark spots, and to learn more about the study, read this.
Other causes of dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation include acne marks and irritation from hair removal procedures, including shaving, waxing, tweezing and laser hair removal. If you’re unsure about the culprit of your dark spots, consult a dermatologist.
The Benefits of Kiehl’s Dark Spot Corrector
Contrary to what you may have heard, dark spots won’t improve on their own over time. In fact, continued unprotected exposure to aggressors, like air pollution and UV rays, can make any preexisting dark spots even more noticeable. What does this mean for you? If you notice any discolored marks on your skin, you’ll want an action plan stat. The sooner you address dark spots, the better your chances of helping them fade in appearance. Got it?
When it comes to gearing up with a powerful dark spot corrector, there are plenty of reasons why Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution should come to mind. The formula—with a clarifying complex of Activated C, and white birch and peony extracts—works on skin’s surface to deeply and rapidly correct the appearance of dark spots and unify the appearance of skin’s tone. With continued, daily use, skin can appear visibly brighter, even and radiant with a visible improvement with clarity. What’s more, the Dark Spot Solution is free of silicones, parabens, fragrances, colorants, and optical diffusers.
How to Use Kiehl’s Dark Spot Corrector
Cleanse skin thoroughly before application. Apply the dark spot serum morning and night before your moisturizer. You can use it as a spot treatment or over the entire face. It can also be used to correct visible discoloration on hands, neck, and chest.
For best results, Kiehl’s recommends pairing Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution with a daily SPF, like Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense. Combining a powerful broad-spectrum sunscreen with a brightening serum can help correct visible signs of skin discoloration exacerbated by UV rays, while helping prevent further damage for improved skin clarity. Remember: Wearing sunscreen each and every day is incredibly important for protecting skin against harmful UV rays for reasons beyond just dark spots. In addition to premature skin aging, unprotected sun exposure can also lead to certain skin cancers. At night, Kiehl’s recommends using Clealy Corrective Dark Spot Solution with Midnight Recovery Concentrate to help restore skin while you snooze.
Who Should Use Kiehl’s Dark Spot Corrector
Anyone and everyone! The formula has been tested on all skin types for safety and gentleness, including sensitive.
Kiehl’s Dark Spot Corrector Review
I have a few dark spots on my complexion due in large part to my negligence with sunscreen during my youth. I wasn’t as knowledgeable then as I am now about the risk factors of unprotected UV exposure for prolonged periods of time. Looking in the mirror every morning at my dark spots is a constant reminder of the sun protection errors of my past. Needless to say, I was really looking forward to reviewing the Kiehl’s dark spot corrector serum. Would it make any difference on my stubborn dark spots? Spoiler alert: Yes! Here’s what I discovered when using the Kiehl’s dark spot corrector serum:
The texture of the serum is a bit slimy at first, but quickly evaporates into skin with a cooling, refreshing feel—no sticky residue left behind. I used it as a spot treatment over my dark spots and paired it with SPF during the day, as instructed. I’m happy to report that I noticed a visible reduction in the appearance of my dark spots. They were still there, yes, but were much less noticeable after about a week’s time than they were before I started using this product.
