A No-Fuss Korean Skin Care Routine for Men
Korean beauty is often centered around a 10-step skin care routine, which for some men can be simply too time-consuming. But that’s no reason to ditch skin care products and Korean trends from your routine altogether. Below, licensed esthetician and Skincare.com consultant, Charlotte Cho, co-creator of K-Beauty site Soko Glam and author of The Little Book of Skin Care: Korean Beauty Secrets for Healthy, Glowing Skin shares a simple, no-fuss Korean skin care routine for men that doesn’t sacrifice results.
An Easy Korean Skin Care Routine For Men
Step #1: Exfoliate
Exfoliators, cleansers, they’re all the same, right? Not quite. As cleansers work to cleanse your skin, Cho explained that exfoliators help slough away dead skin and other debris sitting on top of your skin. Use an exfoliator twice a week before cleansing to keep your skin prepped and polished.
Step #2: Cleanse with a Cleansing Stick
Cleansing sticks are one of the latest K-Beauty products to land Stateside, so why not give them a try? A cleansing stick is not only fun to use, but can often achieve more than one task at once, such as leaving your skin refreshed and cleansed while sloughing away dead cells and dry flakes from its surface. If you’re a fan of classic cleansers, Cho recommends using both oil and water-based cleansers and double cleanse “to really deep clean pores, impurities and acne-causing bacteria.”
Step #3: Use A Toner
According to Cho, toners are a great addition to any skincare routine for their hydrating properties, as well as their ability to assist in rebalancing the skin’s pH level. Many toners also work to soothe and calm skin after washing it, making your pores feel refreshed without irritation.
Step #4: Moisturize Your Skin
Moisturizing is key to any skincare regimen, which is why it’s so important to use a moisturizer at least twice a day after washing and toning your face. Cho says that moisturizers are extremely important because they assist in strengthening the skin barrier and help lock in hydration.
We all know that too many men ditch moisturizers because of one major issue—a greasy residue. But just because you have oily skin doesn’t mean you can get away without hydrating your skin. Your skin isn’t hydrated enough without it, and this can trick your sebaceous glands into producing even more oil. Instead of skipping moisturizer, find one that’s lightweight and delivers a matte finish.
Step #5: Apply Sunscreen
For the sake of your skin, start using sunscreen religiously. Exposing your skin to harsh UV rays without any protection can lead to a whole array of unpleasant problems from premature signs of aging to skin cancer. That’s why sunscreen is so important for keeping a healthy-looking, naturally youthful glow, according to Cho. “Sunscreen is the best anti-aging cream on the market,” she says, which is why we’re begging you to grab some broad-spectrum SPF 15 or higher and lather it on before heading outdoors. Don’t forget to reapply at least every two hours and take other sun protection measures too.
Editor’s tip: While sunscreen is one of the best protective measures to keep your skin guarded from the sun, you should be incorporating other tactics to amp up your protection. Wear protective clothing before stepping outside, and always remember to keep your sun exposure down to a minimum. Read more about proper sun protection, here.
