A Korean Skin-Care Routine for Men
Korean beauty is often centered around a thorough 10-step skin-care routine that promises to give you the skin of your dreams. And we get it — for some men, this may be way too time-consuming or too big of an investment in skin care. But, that doesn’t mean that you need to ditch skin-care products and Korean trends from your routine altogether. We sat down with licensed esthetician, co-creator of Soko Glam and founder of Then I Met You skin care, Charlotte Cho, to see how we can create a condensed version of the Korean skin-care routine made specifically for men. Ahead, get tips and product picks that will give you the results of a 10-step routine without taking up too much time.
STEP 1: Exfoliate
Exfoliators, cleansers, they’re all the same, right? Not exactly. As cleansers work to, well, cleanse, Cho explains that exfoliators help slough away dead skin and other impurities that are sitting on top of your skin. Reach for an exfoliator, like the Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Energizing Scrub. Made specifically for men, use this exfoliator two to three times a week to experience an invigorating scrub and smoother-looking skin.
STEP 2: Cleanse
Cleanse your skin the K-beauty way and use a cleansing stick. Not only are they more fun to use, but they also are multifaceted and can target a couple different skin-care concerns at once. Case in point: the Neogen Real Fresh Green Tea Cleansing Stick. Created by Cho herself, this all-in-one cleanser is formulated with natural green tea to gently clean your skin while offering a brighter and clearer complexion.
STEP 3: Use a Toner
According to Cho, toners are a great addition to any skin-care routine for their hydrating properties and ability to assist in rebalancing the skin’s pH level. Many toners also work to soothe and calm your skin after washing it, making your pores feel refreshed without irritation. We love the Baxter of California Herbal Mint Toner. It works to remove any dirt left behind by your cleanser and prepares your skin for moisturizers and serums that might be coming next (spoiler alert: they are). This toner also soothes any redness, balances oil production, brightens and conditions your skin and prevents environmental damage thanks to its formula infused with mint, cucumber, witch hazel and vitamin E.
Step 4: Moisturize Your Skin
Moisturizing is key to any skin-care regimen, which is why it’s so important to use a moisturizer at least twice a day after washing and toning your face. Cho says that moisturizers are extremely important because they assist in strengthening the skin barrier and help lock in hydration. Try using the House 99 Greater Look Face Moisturiser. This brand knows best as they believe, “When you have great skin, your look is that much greater.” Don’t miss out on great skin and try this lightweight formula that hydrates while reducing shine, softens the skin and is gentle enough to use post-shave.
Step 5: Apply Sunscreen
For the sake of your skin, start using sunscreen religiously. Exposing your skin to harsh UV rays without any protection can lead to anything from premature signs of aging to skin cancer. And yes, before you ask, you do need to apply during the colder months as well. According to Cho, sunscreen is essential for keeping a healthy-looking, naturally youthful glow. “Sunscreen is the best anti-aging cream on the market,” she says, which is why we’re begging you to grab some broad-spectrum SPF 15 or higher, like the CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen Face Lotion. It has broad-spectrum SPF 30 and is suitable for all skin types.
