- Derm DMs: What Are Some of the Most Popular Skin Treatments of Summer 2020?
Several months after closing due to the coronavirus pandemic, dermatologist and plastic surgeon offices have reopened their doors to excited clients ready to start up their regular treatments again. Naturally, we were curious about what procedures people are rushing in to get and what some of the skin issues people are seeking professional advice for now, so we reached out to a dermatologist and a plastic surgeon to find out. Read on for the type of appointments patients are practically lining up to get after months of social distancing at home.
Acne
Dr. Hadley King, New York City-based dermatologist, says that as a result of wearing face masks, she has seen an increased number of visits to address “maskne.” These breakouts are typically around the nose, mouth and chin area and can form due to friction with fabric and the oil, sweat and dirt-trapping environment created on the skin while wearing a facial covering.
Non-Urgent Skin Conditions
“Because non-urgent visits were discouraged during the stay-at-home orders, there's a backlog of all kinds of dermatology appointments,” says Dr. King. At the top of the list are appointments to address skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Chemical Peels
“I think people feel like they have been cooped up and now it's the summer and they want to look fresh, so chemical peels and the Clear and Brilliant laser have been popular choices,” says Dr. King.
Surgical Procedures
Now that so many people are working remotely, procedures that require downtime and recovery are in demand. “Many patients have inquired about surgical procedures like eyelid, face and neck lifts,” says Dr. Bruce Moskowitz, a New York-based oculoplastic surgeon.
Procedures for the Eye Area
Dr. Moskowitz says that he’s noticed a recent increase in the number of patients asking for Botox and fillers around the eye and eyebrow area. He attributes the rise in popularity of these treatments with the fact that people are wearing face masks and are paying more attention to the top half of the face.
