What Bath Bombs Are Made Of (And Why They Fizz)
There’s something extra special about dropping a bath bomb into your tub. Almost immediately, it explodes with various colors and fizzes — creating a work of art a la God Is A Woman in your bath. We always wanted to get to the bottom of how exactly these little soapy bath bombs are made, so we reached out to Camila Pierotti, Founding Partner and Lead of Product Innovation at Sol de Janeiro to get the scoop. Turns out, there’s a lot more science involved than you may think.
What Are the Main Ingredients In a Bath Bomb?
“Bath bombs are generally made with skin-nourishing and cleansing ingredients that are delivered through a fizzing mechanism,” says Pierotti. “Sodium Bicarbonate, or baking soda, creates that immediate fizzing effect.” In addition, the brand’s bath bombs also contain oil and butter components to leave your skin feeling fresh and smooth after your bath experience. Pierotti notes that the Bum Bum Bath Bomba (available at Sephora) is infused with Cupuaçu Butter, Açaí and Coconut oils, detoxifying Sea Salt and Algae Extract, to give you the ultimate body-loving bath experience.
Why Do Bath Bombs Turn Colors?
Part of what makes bath bombs so appealing are their colors. After all, much like scents, different colors can evoke certain memories or experiences. Pierotti says Sol de Janeiro chose its vibrant blue hue “to transform your bath water into a brilliant ocean blue experience.” Are you thinking about your last beach trip yet? We are.
What Are the Benefits of Using a Bath Bomb?
Pierotti notes that using bath bombs really promises a unique bath and body experience. “They’re the perfect complement to your bath routine and a great way to heighten nourishing, skin-softening benefits.” Using a bath bomb is a true body treat — the ultimate relaxation body care routine that cleanses you inside and out. “The benefits are SO delicious,” says Pierotti. And we don’t disagree.

“VIBES. My holiday is now a distant memory, but thanks to @SoldeJaneiro I can at least pretend. I’m starting a petition now for either a candle/room spray/shampoo or anything else that can make myself and my surroundings smell like holiday. What’s your favourite holiday reminiscing product?” —@curvettebrigade 💦🏝#Cheirosa62TheScentofSummer #SOLBathBomba #SoldeJaneiro
