The Best Drugstore Micellar Waters
From the L'Oréal Portfolio of Brands
By now you’re likely up to speed on the many benefits of micellar water. (If not, here’s a refresher.) After gaining traction in France, this multi-tasking liquid eventually landed Stateside and quickly gained popularity amongst the industry’s best. Since then, countless iterations of micellar water have been introduced by some of our beloved beauty brands. But with so many micellar formulas out there, which one reigns supreme? To help you out, we’ve listed a handful of our favorite micellar waters—from the L’Oreal portfolio of brands—sitting pretty on the shelves of your local drugstore. You’ll find options for waterproof makeup, sensitive skin, oily skin and more! Just don’t ask us to pick a favorite—it’s virtually impossible to do so.
WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER MICELLAR WATER
Before we dive into our recommendations of the best drugstore micellar waters, here’s a refresher on why the beauty industry is raving over micellar water to begin with. A huge benefit of micellar water is that it’s an incredibly convenient way to cleanse. When it comes to no-rinse micellar waters, there’s no need to turn on the tap. To lift away makeup, excess dirt, oil, and other impurities off the surface of your skin, all it takes it is a saturated cotton pad with your micellar water of choice. Sweep the pad over your facial contours, and you’re done. We like to store ours in our purse, gym bag, and carry-ons for quick and easy cleansing from virtually anywhere.
THE BENEFITS OF MICELLE TECHNOLOGY
What makes micellar water so efficient, you ask? All micellar waters are formulated with micelles, cleansing molecules that are small in size but mighty in strength. Micelles work together to trap and attract dirt, excess oil, stubborn makeup, and other impurities like a magnet.
In addition to sweeping away unwanted grime and grit on your skin’s surface, most micellar waters are gentle and don’t strip the skin of moisture. The result? Skin that’s clean, refreshed, and comfortable.
HOW TO USE MICELLAR WATER
Use instructions may differ between the formulas, but the majority of micellar waters can be used the same way. First, shake the bottle well. Soak a cotton pad with the solution and slowly glide it over your skin in small, circular motions. No harsh rubbing or tugging necessary. To remove stubborn eye makeup, fold the soaked pad over your eye and leave it there for a few seconds before gently wiping away your makeup. Be careful not to tug on your skin, as the skin around your eyes is delicate. Once all traces of makeup and dirt are removed—you’ll see plenty of evidence on your pad as proof—continue on with the rest of your skin care routine.
LA ROCHE-POSAY MICELLAR WATER ULTRA
La Roche-Posay Micellar Water Ultra cleanses, removes makeup, purifies, and soothes, while respecting the physiological pH of the skin. Available in three sizes—400 ML, 200 ML, and a travel-size 100 ML bottle—the oil-free formula has been a longtime go-to for cleansing skin while on the go.
La Roche-Posay Micellar Water Ultra, $19.99 MSRP
LA ROCHE-POSAY MAKEUP REMOVER MICELLAR WATER GEL
Formulated with the brand’s antioxidant-rich Thermal Spring Water, La Roche-Posay’s Makeup Remover Micellar Water Gel is suitable for all skin types, even sensitive. Plus, it helps to purify and soothe the skin while respecting its pH balance. In addition to purifying the skin of dirt and other impurities, it has a soothing gel texture with a subtle fragrance.
LA ROCHE-POSAY MICELLAR FOAMING WATER
If you prefer rinsing, reach for this water-based foaming cleanser. It helps to cleanse the skin’s surface of dirt, oil, and other impurities but, unlike its counterparts, is not suitable for removing eye makeup and must be rinsed away afterwards. Though, similar to the rest of the collection, it purifies and soothes the skin while respecting its pH balance.
La Roche-Posay Micellar Foaming Water, $18 MSRP
L’OREAL PARIS MICELLAR CLEANSING WATER
Micelle molecules in this formula can help remove unwanted dirt, makeup, and impurities from the surface of skin in one fell swoop. The formula is powerful enough to be effective but gentle enough to respect skin’s natural pH balance. The result? Skin that’s perfectly clean, soothed, and hydrated.
Depending on your specific skin type and skin care routine, there are three micellar cleansing waters to choose from. If excess oil is a concern, reach for the teal-capped micellar water for normal to oily skin. Not only can it help cleanse your skin, but it also leaves it looking purified and matte. If dryness is your issue, reach for the pink-capped micellar water (for normal to dry skin) for a clean that can help to maintain that important moisture balance. Lastly, reach for the blue-capped micellar water (for waterproof makeup) if you need a hand taking off stubborn, waterproof makeup at the end of the day without aggressively rubbing and tugging at your skin.
L’Oreal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water, $9.99 MSRP
