What Are the Benefits of Cucumber Slices on Your Under-Eyes for Puffiness?
Cucumber has long been part of the spa experience, with facialists often placing slices of cucumber onto the eyes during treatment. As much as we enjoy the refreshing feel of cucumber on our eyelids, we can’t help but wonder if this beauty tradition is truly effective. Is the main benefit that it feels nice and cooling on the skin, or is there another force at play? And as far as puffy eyes are concerned, does placing cucumber slices on the eyes really do anything at all to help alleviate the issue? For answers, we reached out to board-certified dermatologist, and Skincare.com consultant, Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali. Below, he helps to settle fact from fiction.
What Role Do Cucumbers Play in Skin Care?
We can say with confidence that cucumbers can play an important role in skin care. According to a study on the potential skincare benefits of cucumbers, the beloved crudité can give a soothing effect on skin and help reduce the appearance of swelling. Cucumber, which boasts seeds that offer a cooling effect, also has the ability to help relax very dry skin. That’s certainly enough to make us want cucumber in our routines, but it doesn’t quite answer the real question of whether or not they can help our eye contour.
Do Cucumber Slices Help Our Eye Contour?
According to Dr. Bhanusali, the answer is yes. “There is certainly some benefit,” he says. “When cooled, cucumbers can reduce inflammation and vasoconstrict vessels around the eye.” Dr. Bhanusali also revealed that cucumber slices could be one trick to helping address pesky under-eye bags and puffiness, sharing that vasoconstriction can help to drive fluid away from the under-eye area and reduce the appearance of bags.

How Can You Add Cucumber into Your Routine?
To reap the benefits of cucumber in your routine, you won’t have to travel to the spa. Simply head to the grocery store to pick up a cucumber or two and you can easily recreate this spa tradition in your own home.
Step One: Place Your Cucumber in the Refrigerator
After heading home from the store, place the cucumber you wish to cut up into the fridge for a few minutes. This helps to play up the natural cooling effect of cucumbers and deliver a truly refreshing feel once placed onto your eyelids. Feel free to use this hack with your eye creams as well.
Step Two: Pick Out a Face Mask
While your cucumber is chilling in the fridge, pick a face mask out from your arsenal. If you’re targeting multiple problem areas, consider multi-masking to better address your concerns.
Step Three: Slice Your Cucumber & Apply Your Mask(s)
Once chilled, begin to slice your cucumber. You’ll only need a few for your eyes, but there’s no harm in cutting a few extras to munch on while you relax. Next, apply your face mask, or masks if you’re using more than one. Now’s also a good time to light some mood candles to really play up the spa-like experience.
Step Four: Place the Cucumber Slices on Your Eyelids & Relax
To help ensure the cucumber slices don’t slide off your eyelids, you’ll want to lay back or recline in your chair. Take this time to truly relax, or even take a quick nap. Keep the slices on your eyes for about 15 minutes (or however long your face mask(s) need to be on your skin) and then discard. If any residue remains, blot it away gently with a washcloth. Follow by rinsing off your face mask(s).
