What Is Banana Powder, Exactly?
Our friends at Dermablend sent over a complimentary sample of their newly-launched Banana Powder for the Skincare.com team to review. And that we did. Read on for our full review of Dermablend’s Banana Powder—plus, we’re breaking down exactly what a banana powder is for those of you who aren’t already aware!
Pairing your makeup and skin care routines can be a bit of a slippery slope. Apply too much moisturizer or sunscreen and your perfectly-applied cat-eye can become smudged beyond repair; apply the wrong kind of makeup for your skin and you might be welcomed to blemishes that can take weeks to disappear. That’s why both a makeup AND skin care products working in tandem is a thing of pure beauty. We’re talking about banana powder, specifically Dermablend’s new Banana Powder! Spoiler alert: This illuminating setting powder does not contain any bananas in it, but it can help brighten the look of your skin while locking in your makeup look.
WHAT IS BANANA POWDER?
Banana powder is a yellow-toned powder that is applied to the face to help neutralize the appearance of discoloration, brighten the skin, and set your makeup in place. Although banana won’t be found in its composition, the product’s color is completely inspired by the fruit, making it both whimsical and sleek in appearance.
The idea of applying a yellow powder to your skin may give you some pause. But believe it or not, applying a product with a yellow undertone can actually enhance tired-looking skin. This goes back to the basics of primary color knowledge. If you take colors that sit across from each other on the color wheel, they can cancel each other out and hide any unwanted shades on your skin. This is especially true for blue and yellow tones: applying a yellow corrector to a dark spot can help reduce its appearance.
Dermablend deems its banana color as universally flattering, and it can be used by all skin types. The creaminess of the shade is more of the banana fruit than its peel, making it less jarring than whatever image the word “yellow” may conjure. It’s a nice break from the usual pinks and browns, an adventurous tone for the adventurous type.
WHAT CAN DERMABLEND BANANA POWDER DO?
The Dermablend Banana Powder is a great setting powder to finish off your makeup look. The weightless powder—formulated with pigmented pearls—provides a soft sheen to brighten the complexion instantly. The formula also helps lock in your makeup to ensure smudge- and transfer-resistance. When applied over top of Dermablend foundations, expect to see up to 16 hours of consistent color wear that is never flat or ashy.
DERMABLEND BANANA POWDER REVIEW
Lucky for us, the team over at Dermablend Professional gave us a complimentary sample of Banana Powder to give a test run, and it did not disappoint!
The main concern I had when using Banana Powder was that applying it over my makeup might mute the makeup itself. However, the product’s formula avoids any sort of ashy residue. Being olive-toned, the wrong powder can leave my pores looking too wide and my tone too chalky. When using the Dermablend Banana Powder, it barely looked as if anything else was applied to my face aside from moisturizer.
I decided to apply Banana Powder to my skin in the morning ahead of my morning commute. During an unseasonably hot fall day, the air from my apartment to the station was hot and heavy. After sweating for nearly an hour, I was imagining what I must have looked like before I had a chance to use the office bathroom. I was pleasantly surprised: although my hair had flattened, my skin had not. There were also zero smudges to be found.
Checking my skin periodically throughout the day, my makeup look was still intact by the end of my work day. All in all? I’m incredibly pleased with Banana Powder. It’s the perfect match for any skin type, and you’ll hardly know you’re wearing it throughout the day. So give it a whirl, and go bananas.
HOW TO USE DERMABLEND BANANA POWDER
The powder’s application is simple. You can pat in on with either your finger or a brush as a last step to your makeup routine. Apply a generous amount of powder and let it sit on your skin for two minutes before buffing it off.
