How To Clean Your Beauty Blending Sponge
Wondering how to clean your beauty blending sponge? We share a step-by-step guide for cleansing beauty sponges and blenders the right way, ahead.
Think your dirty makeup brushes are the only makeup tools that can wreak havoc on your skin if not cared for properly? Think again! Beauty blending sponges are just as guilty—if not, more so—of being breeding grounds for pore-clogging gunk and bacteria. If that’s not enough to scare you, we share more on why you should cleanse your beauty sponges and blenders—plus, how to clean them the right way—below.
WHY YOU SHOULD CLEAN YOUR BLENDING SPONGE
To state the obvious: you should cleanse your blending sponge at least once a week—or more often if time allows—to get rid of any product buildup, bacteria, or gunk that might be taking up residency on or inside of your sponge. This helps to ensure that none of these pore-clogging culprits make their way to your complexion during your daily makeup application.
Another reason why it is important—read: 100 percent necessary—to give your sponge a weekly deep cleanse is to make it last longer! Over time, product buildup on your sponge can make it harder to evenly apply cosmetics and can cause the sponge to look and feel… well… gross. So, the next time you are treating your complexion to a weekly deep cleansing facial mask, treat your sponge to the same. We share how to clean your beauty blenders, below.
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR BLENDING SPONGE
Cleansing your blending sponge can require some man power—and a deep cleansing makeup brush cleaner, like this one from NYX Professional Makeup. We love this brush and blender cleanser because it helps to make cleansing your sponges, blenders, and makeup brushes a little bit easier.
STEP ONE: RINSE YOUR BLENDING SPONGE WITH LUKEWARM WATER
To start, simply run your dirty blending sponge under lukewarm water and squeeze. To make step two a bit easier, try to remove as much product as possible during this step. The more you rinse and squeeze during this step, the easier it can be to cleanse in step two. When rinsing our own beauty blending sponges, we like to see how clear we can get the water to run after squeezing—the clearer, the better!
STEP TWO: LATHER WITH A MAKEUP BRUSH CLEANSER
After you’ve given your blending sponge a good rinse, pour some of the makeup brush cleanser into a small bowl and dunk the sponge. Using your fingers, massage the solution into the sponge and continue to rinse under lukewarm water until the excess water runs clean. To ensure that your sponge is squeaky clean, you may need to repeat this step a few times—and don’t be afraid to refresh your bowl of makeup brush cleanser after a few dunks. If you weren’t able to remove all of the excess product from the sponge in step one, the solution may turn murky—like dirty water—and need to be changed to ensure that you get the most out of your weekly sponge bath (pun…intended).
STEP THREE: ALLOW YOUR BLENDING SPONGE TO DRY
After you’ve given your sponge a deep cleanse, place it on a paper towel and allow it to fully dry. You can place the towel—with the sponges on top—on your kitchen table, your dresser, or any other dry, open area. Whatever you do, don’t place a wet or damp beauty blending sponge back in your makeup bag (this goes for when using it, too!)—that is like an open invitation to any and all bacteria that may have their eyes on your freshly cleansed—and now very damp—sponge.
STEP FOUR: STORE YOUR BLENDING SPONGE PROPERLY
After cleansing your sponge (and waiting for it to dry), you may want to consider keeping it separate from your beauty products in your makeup bag. Unless you disinfect them religiously, the germs and bacteria that may be living on the outside of the products’ packaging—simply caused by handling them throughout the day—can make their way to your sponge and reverse all of your hard work. We suggest either saving the packaging that your blender sponge came in, or using a small plastic container, anti-microbial stand, or anything else that will keep your sponge out of germs’ way.
WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR BEAUTY BLENDING SPONGE
Keeping a squeaky clean blending sponge is great and all, but it doesn’t mean that you can get away with using the same sponge forever. Ideally, you should replace your sponge every 2-3 months. If you are due for a replacement, we suggest giving these Infallible Blend sponges from L’Oréal Paris a try. With three sponges to choose from—a foundation blender, concealer blender, and contour blender—you won’t have to use the same blender for every product and can achieve effortless blending time and time again. What’s more? Unlike other beauty blending sponges, you don’t have to dampen these drugstore beauty blenders before using—which, as blender sponge devotees (like ourselves) know, can save you time in your beauty routine.
Now that blending sponge is clean, it’s time to think about those makeup brushes! We share why it’s necessary to cleanse makeup brushes regularly and how to do it the right way here!
