Your belly button may not be the first place you think of when it comes to cleansing, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore it. While there’s no need to devote a 10-step skincare routine to the area, it’s still important to keep it clean. Ahead, we’re sharing reasons why you should be cleaning your belly button regularly — plus, tips on how to do so.

Why You Should Clean Your Belly Button

Just because your belly button is small and unassuming doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep up with its hygiene. If left unattended, your belly button can build up a certain amount of bacteria and dirt, which could lead to an infection. Believe it or not, your belly button houses over 60 types of different bacteria. These bacteria — along with dirt, sweat, soap and lotion residue, and lint — can accumulate over time and create a bad odor. That’s why cleaning your belly button regularly is imperative. Keep reading to find out how in three simple steps.

How to Clean Your Belly Button

STEP 1: Wash

Create a solution of warm water and gentle soap and apply it to the skin around your belly button and just inside. We recommend using the CeraVe Hydrating Body Wash, a non-irritating formula that’s rich in ceramides. Rinse with warm water and dry the area thoroughly with a soft towel.

STEP 2: Be Mindful of Folds & Creases

Whether you have a belly button that sticks in or out, it’s important to make sure you’re cleaning each and every part of it. Take the extra time to ensure that you’re reaching all the folds and creases of your belly button to target any dirt or other impurities lingering within.

STEP 3: Use a Cotton Swab

When you’re diving into your belly button cleaning regimen, don’t just use your finger. In the same way you would clean inside your ears, try using a cotton swab to gently cleanse the inside of your belly button with the same mild soap solution.
