How to Detox Your Skin Post-Summer
Even though summer technically runs through the end of September, let’s face it, everyone unofficially bids farewell to the season after Labor Day. First up on the prepare-for-fall to-do list? Giving our skin love much-needed love after a season of summer indulgences—whether it be frequent dips in chlorinated pools, 3-months of “Yes way, Rosé,” or a little too much sun bathing. Even though we’ve faithfully applied sunscreen all summer long, our skin can still look a little worse for wear once the season changes— think: clogged pores, dry skin, sun damage, and chapped lips. Luckily, all it takes to reboot skin are a few tweaks to our current skin care routine. Need a little guidance? Read on for tips on how to care for your skin post-summer, here!
DEEP CLEAN YOUR PORES
After months’ worth of fun in the sun, chances are you have some pretty gnarly dirt and grime piling up on the surface of your skin. Sweat mixed with makeup and environmental impurities can take a toll on the appearance of our complexions , including making our pores appear large and in charge. To help improve the look of pores and help keep breakouts at bay, detox your complexion with cleansing masks. Don’t be afraid to use more than one to create a multi-masking routine! One of our go-to’s for multi-masking is L’Oréal Paris’ new Pure-Clay Mask range, which are formulated with three mineral clays plus one unique nature-sourced ingredient to target specific skin needs. If face masks aren’t your thing, cleanse your skin thoroughly with a Clarisonic Smart Profile. The device helps cleanse the skin better than hands alone—for a deep clean feel from head-to-toe.
GO WILD WITH MOISTURIZER
Seriously, we mean it. We’re talking night creams, day creams, creams with SPF, oils, body creams…the more the merrier. Chlorine, salt water, UV rays—all of these summer mainstays have the potential to dry out your skin, so up your moisturizing game, especially after cleansing your skin and taking a shower while your skin is still slightly damp. Be sure to reach for a moisturizer every time you wash your face (no matter what) and keep your body hydrated with your favorite body lotion or a lightweight oil, like Kiehl’s Simply Restorative Argan Dry Oil.
ADDRESS ANY EXISTING SUN DAMAGE
Once your summer glow begins to fade, you may start to notice some signs of sun damage—think: newfound freckles, dark spots, or an uneven skin tone. Sadly, you can’t undo damage caused by UV rays (which is why it’s so important to reach for a Broad Spectrum sunscreen daily and take additional sun-protection measures), but you can help minimize the visible appearance of sun damage on the skin’s surface with a little effort. To help fade the look of dark spots and even out your skin tone, use a dark spot corrector that has been formulated for your skin type. We’ve listed out some of our favorites, here.
USE ANTIOXIDANTS AND SUNSCREEN
Just because summer’s over, doesn’t mean you’re off the hook when it comes to wearing broad-spectrum SPF. You know that sun damage we were just discussing? It can happen year-round, even in the fall and winter, so don’t skip an application of sunscreen…ever. Reach for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher that’s been formulated for your skin type every single day. If you’re heading out for a day in the sun, take additional sun-protection measures like wearing a wide-brimmed hat, protective clothing, seeking shade, and avoiding peak sun hours. For extra protection against environmental aggressors and to help minimize the visible signs of aging, pair your Broad Spectrum SPF with an antioxidant-rich serum, like SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic. Together, antioxidants and SPF make an anti-aging force to be reckoned with. What better to way to jump into fall than with protected skin!
Did you know that we shed between 30,000 to 40,000 old skin cells per day? Yikes is right. When your skin is covered with dead skin cells, it needs a helping hand to look radiant and feel smooth. Exfoliate weekly with gentle scrubs to help slough away old cells on skin’s surface. One of our favorite scrubs to reach for in the shower is Kiehl’s Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub. This indulgent body scrub effectively removes dead surface skin cells without over-drying the skin. Formulated with apricot seed exfoliating particles and skin-enriching emollients, the skin is left feeling soft and smooth.
Top tip: If your skin is sensitive, talk with your dermatologist before exfoliating.
TREAT YOUR POUT
We can’t forget about our pouts! Since our lips lack melanin, they are especially susceptible to sunburns, and require a little extra love. After several months filled with long beach days and outdoor activities, you’ll want to make sure any dryness on your pout is cared for. We recommend incorporating an exfoliating lip scrub into your routine to help slough away dry, flaky skin on your lips and prepare them for further hydration. After exfoliating your lips, it’s time to hydrate your pout. Reach for nourishing lip balms, sticks, stains—whatever you prefer—that boast hydrating formulas with ingredients like vitamin E, oils, or aloe vera. Even better, find a formula you love that contains SPF to help prevent sun damage. For nighttime renewal, keep a heavier balm bedside to help hydrate your pout while you catch some Zzz’s.
