How to Fight a Breakout Without Breaking the Bank

Acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S., and unlike popular opinion, teens aren’t the only ones at its mercy. Breakouts can happen to anyone—adults included!—regardless of skin type or tone. When zits strike, don’t hesitate to kick them to the curb. Arm yourself with an arsenal of acne-fighting products as an immediate line of defense. We realize fully, though, that costs can very quickly add up. Nobody wants to spend a big chunk of their hard-earned cash on overpriced cleansers, moisturizers, and spot treatments. That’s why we’ve taken it upon ourselves to find pimple-zapping products that cost less than $20, so you don’t have to (go broke). Pesky pimples, we challenge you. It’s go time!

PURIFY CLOGGED PORES

First things first, keep your hands off your face! You may be eager to pop, squeeze, or pick at your skin to get rid of the pimple(s), but don’t…seriously. Grab a mild, non-drying cleanser—formulated for acne-prone skin—that can help release the gunk from your clogged pores. Vichy Normaderm Gel Cleanser is formulated with salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and micro-exfoliating LHA to gently exfoliate and purify pores, remove excess sebum, and help prevent new skin imperfections. The gel lathers into a fresh foam that’ll leave problem skin feeling soft and ultra-clean without dryness or irritation. Bingo!

SWITCH TO A GEL MOISTURIZER

After you pat—not aggressively rub—your skin dry, follow up with a gel moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. Though it seems counterintuitive to hydrate your skin during a breakout, it’s an important step; when skin lacks hydration it can spark the sebaceous glands to compensate by over-producing oil. We like Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream. It’s oil-free and helps skin look and feel supple, smooth, and hydrated for 24 hours.

APPLY A SPOT TREATMENT

Spot treatments are notoriously pricy, but Kiehl’s Blue Herbal Spot Treatment—at $18—is super budget-friendly. The formula—with salicylic acid and extracts of cinnamon bark and ginger root—quickly penetrates pores to eliminate most acne blemishes and help prevent new ones. Before applying, cleanse the skin thoroughly. Cover the affected area with a thin layer one to three times daily. Warning: excessive drying of the skin may occur, so it’s recommended to start with one application daily and then gradually increase to two or three times daily, if needed, or as directed by a doctor. Stop using the treatment if you notice any signs of irritation, dryness, or peeling.

If your breakout isn’t budging, consult your dermatologist for a more personalized plan to help target your blemishes.
