QQ, What’s the Difference Between a Lash Mask and a Lash Serum?

Once upon a time, my eyelashes were long, thick and voluminous — all without mascara. But over the years — and especially over the past few months — I’ve noticed that they’ve been falling out more than normal. It could be a result of my heavy mascara usage, wearing fake lashes or simply from rubbing and tugging around the eye area when removing makeup. To give my lashes some TLC, I set out to create a lash-care routine with products from Maybelline. But after receiving a complimentary sample of the Maybelline New York The Falsies Lash Mask and the Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Boosting Eyelash Serum, I wasn’t quite sure which to use. To find out the difference between a lash mask and lash serum,  I turned to Laura Martone, a senior chemist for Maybelline New York.

What’s the Difference Between the Maybelline New York Lash Mask and Boosting Serum?

While both products are designed to condition eyelashes and boost lash health, there are a few key differences. The Lash Sensational Boosting Serum, which is infused with conditioners like glycerin and vitamin B5, is designed to create fuller and thicker-looking lashes with four week of use. The Falsies Lash Mask however, which is formulated with a pro-kera complex and shea butter, creates healthier looking lashes overnight.

The textures and thickness of the products also differ a bit. “The Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Boosting Serum is a lightweight gel that dries quickly and delivers a thin layer of product,” says Martone. “For the Maybelline New York The Falsies Lash Mask, we wanted a more sensorial experience, so we incorporated a high level of rich butters to produce a lightweight, creamy feel.” The mask also has a nice floral scent, while the serum is odorless.

Which Product Is Right for You?

If you’ve noticed that your lashes are falling out or want fuller, thicker lashes, the Lash Sensational Boosting Serum is for you. The Falsies Lash Mask on the other hand, is great for people who use a ton of mascara, wear false lashes often or are in need of a conditioning treatment. It’s pretty common to have an overlap of these two concerns so you can incorporate both products into your routine. “The serum should be applied daily and the mask should be applied less frequently. Not every day, but as needed and up to three times per week,” says Martone. “You can also apply mascara once the serum has dried, but the mask is to be used alone and in the evening before bed.”

To apply The Falsies Lash Mask, apply the product in a zig zag movement from the roots to the tip of your eyelashes. Keep the product on overnight and when you wake up, your eyelashes will feel rebooted, soft and supple. For the Lash Sensational Boosting Serum, apply the product from the root to the tip of your lashes. When using the serum in the morning, make sure you let the product dry completely before layering on mascara.
