5 Silicone Primers That Could Change Your Skin-Care Game

Silky smooth skin is every beauty junkie’s dream. And truth is, thanks to silicone primers, we’re one step closer to that soft, supple, baby angel-like complexion. Silicone primers are formulas that contain silicone additives that help create the feeling and appearance of silk-like skin. To get to the bottom of what skin types might benefit from them and why you might love to use one right before your full face beat, we chatted with celebrity makeup artist Gabriel Almodovar. Here’s why he thinks you should give silicone makeup primers a try.

Why Use a Silicone Primer?

According to Almodovar, silicone primers have many benefits: “They temporarily smooth out the look of the surface of the skin and work to blur pores, lines and wrinkles. They can also hydrate the skin because of their emollient nature along with creating a barrier on the surface of the skin that helps prevents moisture loss.”

Who Benefits From a Silicone Primer?

If you have normal to dry skin, trying a silicone primer might be the way to go. If you have oily skin or are acne-prone, you may want to proceed with caution. “Silicone aids the skin with absorption — acne-prone skin might want to either stay away from it our use it sparingly,” says Almodovar, because it may appear to capture all the dirt, grime and oil, but some of the bad stuff may sink right back into the skin.

If They Pill, Don’t Worry

Sometimes silicone primers don’t mesh well with other products and cause makeup to pill. The good news is that if this happens, “gently wipe some of the silicone primer off and dust the pilled-up primer away with a brush,” says Almodovar. Easy peasy!

Ahead, we rounded up our six favorite silicone makeup primers.

Lancôme La Base Pro Primer

This oil-free primer by Lancôme is a translucent formula that works to create a smoothing effect on the skin with each use. We love this one underneath the Lancôme Teint Idole Foundation or any full-coverage formula.

Maybelline New York Baby Skin Pore Eraser Primer

For an affordable silky smooth alternative, the Baby Skin primer is coined the “instant pore eraser” for a reason. Upon application, the appearance of pores is minimized and your skin is left feeling plumped and ready for makeup.

Dr. Brandt Pores No More Primer

Pores No More by Dr. Brandt is perhaps our favorite primer when we’re looking for a no-makeup makeup finish. We love how lightweight it feels on the skin, and we like to pair it with a thin layer of tinted moisturizer to complete the look.

Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer

This oil-free mineral veil primer has a cult following, and after using it under makeup, we understand why: It basically feels like you’re wearing a cloud on your face..

NYX Professional Makeup Angel Veil Primer

Another more affordable option certainly has to be the Angel Veil Primer by NYX. The name in this one says it all. It’s smooth, creamy, minimizes shine, and you’ll feel like you’re skin has been touched by an actual baby angel, guaranteed.
