The 5 Biggest Skin Care Trends for 2018

Beauty trends are forever changing, with new fads cropping up and old ones evolving into something entirely different, both of which can make it challenging to keep up. You won’t be blamed if you’re out of the loop; even those who consider themselves to be skin obsessed can’t be expected to know about every single skin care trend. However, soon there will be no excuse. To get informed about what’s trending in 2018, all you have to do is stick around. We’re sharing the top five skin care trends for this year, just click through to see the latest products, innovations, and more set to overtake the skin care industry.

Trend #1: Microbiome Support
Chances are you’ve already heard about the trend of products that help protect and restore the skin’s moisture barrier but are you in the know about microbiome support? The skin microbiome is a population of microorganisms at the skin’s surface that work in conjunction with the moisture barrier to keep skin looking and feeling its best. Environmental aggressors can cause the microbiome to become unbalanced, but products formulated with prebiotics—like the La Roche-Posay Lipikar body moisturizers—can have a rebalancing effect.

Trend #2: At-Home Gadgets
Just as DIY hair dyeing and home improvement are increasing in popularity, DIY skin care is making the same strides. And no, we aren’t referring to concocting your own beauty products—we’re talking at-home gadgets. Do-it-yourself light therapy masks, anti-aging lasers, and microdermabrasion devices are gaining traction.

Trend #3: Crystal-Infused Skin Care
It should come as no surprise that crystals are trending in skin care, since they’ve been everywhere for months. Your friends are already using them to ward off bad vibes—or at least decorate their bookshelves—and soon they’ll be coating their skin with them. Rather than rub crystals over your skin, face masks and creams are being formulated with crystals like amethyst and tourmaline, making it easy to give your routine a New Age touch.

Trend #4: Platelet Rich Plasma
You may have seen your favorite celebrity with a face covered in blood, claiming it was a beauty treatment, and thought they were a little crazy. It’s an understandable first reaction but don’t be so quick to judge. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) facials—also referred to as the vampire facial and vampire face lift—involve drawing the patient’s blood, then injecting the platelets back into their skin. The results? Overall skin improvement and an anti-aging effect.

Trend #5: Rubber Face Masks
Face masks have been a major skin care trend for years, and there’s no reason to expect that to change anytime soon. In 2018, rubber face masks in particular will be the product in everyone’s virtual shopping cart. One of the latest K-beauty trends to catch on Stateside, rubber face masks come packed with fan-favorite ingredients and just as many skin care benefits as your other favorite face masks. What’s not to like?
