Does it help reduce the appearance of dark spots? Keep reading to find out!
What Can Cause the Appearance of Skin Discoloration?
The first step in addressing skin discoloration is knowing why it may occur in the first place. There are a number of potential factors that could be involved with skin discoloration. Curious to know what they are? You’re in luck. We share a few common causes of the appearance of dark marks and discoloration, below!
1. UV Rays: One of the most common causes of visible dark spots and discoloration is the damaging effect that UV rays can have to the surface of your skin.. Unsurprisingly, the appearance of dark spots aren’t the only thing you have to worry about after basking out in the sun. Noticeable wrinkles, fine lines, and even certain skin cancers can occur as a result of repeated, prolonged, and unprotected UV exposure, too.
What to Do: Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day and reapply regularly—even when it’s cloudy!
2. Air Pollution: According to a study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, chronic exposure to traffic-related air pollution can cause the appearance of dark spots. Hear that big city dwellers?
What to Do: One line of defense to help address the effects of air pollution on the surface of your skin is to use products formulated with antioxidants—like vitamin C, for instance—to help protect skin from potential free radical damage. Wear it in tandem with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily.
3. Hormonal Shifts: Melasma—often dubbed the “mask of pregnancy” due to its prevalence amongst pregnant women—is a form of skin discoloration that may occur as a result of sudden hormonal shifts, including—yup, you guessed it—pregnancy.
What to Do: Melasma can sometimes fade on its own, typically when the trigger is no longer being experienced. However, in the case of melasma that doesn’t fade, it’s recommended to speak with your dermatologist about your options.
Additional culprits of skin discoloration may include intrinsic aging and plain old genes. It’s obvious that daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is a must, but another great tactic to help diminish the visible appearance of dark spots and discoloration is a correcting product. That’s where SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector comes in. Scroll down for the benefits of SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector and to discover how the product performed on my dark spots!
The Benefits of SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector
This multi-layer corrector can help reduce the appearance of stubborn skin discoloration and uneven skin tone to help boost skin’s natural radiance. The formula—with an exclusive cocktail featuring 1% hydroxyphenoxy propionic acid, 0.5% ellagic acid, and 0.3% salicylic acid—exfoliates the skin’s surface to help fade the appearance of discoloration and improve overall skin appearance.
How to Use SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector
Twice daily, apply 1-2 pumps of SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector to a dry face and areas of discoloration, or as directed by a physician. In the morning, apply SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector after an antioxidant serum—the brand’s C E Ferulic is a good pick—and before sunscreen. Since UV rays can exacerbate the look of dark marks and discoloration, you’re best served to limit sun exposure while using this product. There’s no sense in un-doing all of your hard work, right?
Who Should Use SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector
SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector is safe for all skin types, except very sensitive. When in doubt, consult your dermatologist or a licensed skin care physician prior to use.
SkinCeuticals Advanced Pigment Corrector Review
I wasn’t always as diligent about my sunscreen use as I am today. Growing up, I rarely applied sunscreen before heading outdoors, unless it was a beach day. Even then, I wasn’t reapplying the sunscreen as recommended at least every two hours. (Gasp, I know!) These poor choices put my skin at risk for premature aging, including dark spots. I wish I could turn back the hands of time and wear SPF protection on my skin all those times I skipped an application. Alas, it’s an impossibility and I have to live with my mistakes…and the skin care side effects that have occurred as a result of them. Yes, I have discolored marks on my complexion. They’re not incredibly noticeable, but they serve as a daily reminder of the skin care gaffs of my youth. If there’s one thing I can’t stress enough, it’s to wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher each and every day from a young age. I’m living with the consequences now and—trust me—it’s not fun.
I can pretty much get away with hiding my uneven skin tone and dark spots with foundation and concealer, but those benefits are only temporary. (Plus, who wants to wear makeup all the time?) To help reduce the appearance of my dark spots, I look to correcting serums, moisturizers, and more to give me a hand. I’ve tried plenty of skin-correcting products, but this would be my first time putting Advanced Pigment Corrector to the test. Here’s what I found:
- My skin consistently feels silky and smooth.
- Stubborn dark spots now appear less noticeable on my complexion.
- The product is non-irritating—for me, anyway—and includes no fragrances.
- The overall radiance of my skin is heightened.
The verdict: I’m certainly satisfied with the results! I experienced no negative reactions after using Advanced Pigment Corrector and will continue to incorporate it into my daily routine.
