SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier Review
SkinCeuticals just released its H.A Intensifier, a serum formulated with hyaluronic acid to help amplify your skin’s hyaluronic acid levels. We were lucky enough to get our hands on a complimentary sample from the brand to review. Below, you’ll find some more information about hyaluronic acid, learn more about this innovative—and purple(!)—hyaluronic acid serum, and discover exactly what we thought of H.A Intensifier!
Over the last year there’s been one ingredient that’s gotten a lot of (very well-deserved) buzz in the skin care world: hyaluronic acid. This naturally-occurring substance is to thank for the plump, hydrated appearance of youthful-looking skin. Unfortunately, as we age those natural stores of the substance can decline and the visible signs of skin aging can become more noticeable. So it’s no wonder hyaluronic acid has become such a popular ingredient in the formulas of serums, creams, and even cleansers! But what if we told you there’s a great serum formulated with hyaluronic acid on the block that was created to help your skin retain its own levels of hyaluronic acid? SkinCeuticals brand new H.A. Intensifier aims to do just that. Learn more about this unique serum ahead!
What Is Hyaluronic Acid?
As stated above, hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally within our own bodies. Despite its name, this acid is actually a known hydrator with the ability to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. Board-certified dermatologist and Skincare.com consultant Dr. Lisa Ginn explains that this type of moisturizing ingredient is called a humectant. “These molecules act like sponges that pull water in, in order to pull moisture over your skin like a blanket.” This ability to hold onto moisture is what has made hyaluronic acid such a popular ingredient in topical skin care products.
When we’re young, hyaluronic acid is found naturally in abundant quantities in our skin—as well as our tissues and joint fluid. Known as a glycosaminoglycan, it is one of the key reasons youthful-looking skin appears plump, hydrated, and radiant, since it is known to cushion and lubricate. However, as we age, this abundance can begin to dwindle and our skin can begin to show visible signs of skin aging. Chief among them? A noticeable loss of moisture, plumpness, elasticity, and radiance—those tell-tale signs of youth. In addition to intrinsic aging—that is aging caused by the passing of time—a poor diet and smoking can also affect the amount of hyaluronic acid that occurs naturally within the body.
Dr. Ginn explains that hyaluronic acid is a potent humectant that can be soothing to the skin and can be found in formulas that are designed for all skin types including oily, combination, and sensitive. You can find it in serums, moisturizers, masks, and more thanks to its incredible versatility. While it may be listed as hyaluronic acid, it’s possible to see it as its salt derivative form: sodium hyaluronate.
The Benefits of SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier
While hyaluronic acid can be found in a number of formulas, one of our favorite ways to incorporate it into our skin care routines is with a serum and SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier fits the bill! In addition to hyaluronic acid, the formula boasts Proxylane—a patented anti-aging ingredient—and purple rice extract to help support the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid reservoir in the uppermost layers to help renew plumpness, elasticity, and firmness.
In addition to helping skin to appear more plump and firm, the serum helps to target three major signs of skin aging: crow’s feet, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. Quick refresh:
- Crow’s Feet: The eye contour is one of the first areas to show the signs of skin aging and often the first little wrinkles and crinkles appear in the outer corners of either eye. Known as crow’s feet since the fine lines take on a similar appearance to a bird’s foot.
- Nasolabial Folds: More commonly known as smile or laugh lines, nasolabial folds are creases in the skin that appear from the outer corners of the nose and extend down to the corners of the mouth.
- Marionette Lines: As you can imagine—given the descriptive name—these facial wrinkles appear under each corner of the mouth and extend straight down.
H.A. Intensifier aims to help improve the appearance of each of these signs of facial skin aging and wrinkling by visibly reducing them to form a taut, smooth canvas that helps to refine the skin’s complexion.
How to Use H.A. Intensifier
Like your other favorite serums, this hyaluronic acid serum comes in a glass bottle with a pipette to help you use only the amount you’ll truly need each time you apply. Twice daily you’ll want to squeeze the bulb to draw up the product and then apply four to six drops to your face, extending down to your neck and chest. Upon opening the serum, the first thing we noticed was its color. It’s a gorgeous shade of purple that you’d expect to see in a tube of lipstick but not necessarily in a skin care product. But what gives the serum this pretty hue is the purple rice extract so you can rest assured there are no harmful dyes—and no, it won’t stain your skin! Next up was the texture, it has a very unique serum-meets-gel texture that we expected to feel sticky but actually felt incredibly smooth on our complexion.
