This Game-Changing Wearable Can Actually Track Your pH Level

One of the biggest skin care trends that’s still going strong is the expansion of wearable technology. Brands that we love have entered the wearable space, developing products that help us tackle specific skin concerns—from visible signs of aging to protection against environmental aggressors—in order to ensure each individual’s skin is getting the best personalized attention it can.

The team at La Roche-Posay have most certainly taken the wearable skin care technology space by storm. Expanding off of their first-ever wearable product launch, the brand recently unveiled their newest wearable to the mix—the My Skin Track pH—at the 2019 CES Expo in Las Vegas. Below, we get into detail about what the award-winning My Skin Track pH is, how it works, and just how it can help improve your skin’s health starting from the inside-out.

WHAT IS MY SKIN TRACK PH?

Understanding your pH level goes beyond the basics of chemistry. According to board-certified dermatologist and Skincare.com expert, Dr. Dendy Engelman, “It is essential to understand the skin’s pH level in order to protect the outermost layer of one’s skin, the acid mantle.” Typically, a healthy pH level is an acidic range between 4.5 or 5.5 on a scale of 14. Should the acid mantle be unbalanced in any way, the skin becomes susceptible to environmental aggressors causing variety of negative effects—such as wrinkles, a dulled complexion, or even eczema—that the naturally-formed barrier is meant to stabilize.

This tool has the potential to inspire consumers to adopt healthier skin care habits and empower medical professionals with an entirely new way to recommend skin care regimens.

This is where the My Skin Track pH comes in. Still in its prototype stage, the wearable comes in the form of a thin, flexible sensor that measures pH balance with a companion app. Both work in tandem to provide recommendations that can help users to readjust their pH level should it be askew. “pH is a leading indicator of skin health,” states Professor Thomas Luger, Head of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Munster, Germany, “This tool has the potential to inspire consumers to adopt healthier skin care habits and empower medical professionals with an entirely new way to recommend skin care regimens.”

HOW DOES MY SKIN TRACK PH WORK?

Embodying La Roche-Posay’s belief that healthy skin starts from within, the My Skin Track pH is a sensor with the ability to adhere directly to the skin by using microfluid technology. Once attached, the sensor reads pH levels by taking into account the amount of sweat excreted by pores. This information is then translated by the My Skin Trace UV pH app, where users can learn more about what their pH level is, the steps they can take to regain their pH balance, and to also discover which products can help them along the way. All this is completed in no less than fifteen minutes, a far cry from the days it would take for a sweat sample to be sent to a lab for review.

We are committed to bringing scientific progress directly to consumers, to help them take great care of their skin. The microfluidic technology behind the My Skin Track pH is nearly two decades in the making. Epicore Biosystems, the brand’s partner in this endeavor, developed the materials in an effort to learn more about pH’s effects on the skin and how addressing this issue can help to the skin conditions it causes. “This new prototype represents the next step in La Roche-Posay’s beauty tech journey,” says Laetitia Toupet, La Roche-Posay’s Global General Manager, “We are committed to bringing scientific progress directly to consumers, to help them take great care of their skin.”

HOW TO USE MY SKIN TRACK PH

Simply place the My Skin Track pH sensor on your inner arm until the center dots take on color (five to fifteen minutes). Then, open the corresponding My Skin Track pH app to photograph the sensor so it can read the sensor’s pH measurement. Based on the app’s reading, La Roche-Posay will be able to provide the appropriate lifestyle and product recommendations to help you get your pH level back on track.
