How to Prepare Your Skin For Winter
Although we technically have about a month left of fall, the colder weather is fast approaching. And you know what that means… winter is coming! Ahead, we’re sharing a roundup and tips and tricks to help you prepare your skin for the frigid winter months ahead.
EXFOLIATION IS YOUR BFF
Want to know how to reduce the appearance of dry, dull winter skin? Start exfoliating the skin on your face and body regularly (about 1-2 times a week, depending on your skin type). You can use a store-bought body scrub—like this one from The Body Shop—or make your own using sea salt, coconut oil, and other hydrating DIY skin care ingredients.
DEEP CONDITION ON THE REGULAR
Keeping your skin hydrated in the dry winter months is key to healthy-looking skin. We recommend keeping a jar of nourishing coconut oil close by and applying it to your hands and feet before bed. That way, the coconut oil can deep condition these rougher parts of your body while you sleep. Just be sure to wear cotton gloves and socks to lock in the hydration and avoid the oil getting all over your cozy flannel bedding.
LAYER ON THE MOISTURE
Speaking of hydration, a little extra moisture never hurts— especially if you suffer from seasonal dry skin. Invest in a hydrating facial serum and apply it under your moisturizer or night cream. We recommend Lancôme’s Absolue Precious Oil Nourishing Luminous Oil, as it can provide the complexion with nourishing hydration and promotes a youthful-looking golden glow.
TAKE A BATH
Let’s face it…the weather outside is frightful—read: frigid! Warm up your body and hydrate your skin with a nice warm bath. Pour some Epsom salts, coconut oil, and your favorite essential oils into the mix or you can make your own fizzy bath bomb for some added Zen!
TREAT YOURSELF TO A HYDRATING FACIAL
One of our favorite ways to combat seasonal dry skin is with hydrating face masks. We recommend trying Vichy’s Quenching Mineral Face Mask formulated with the brand’s Mineralizing Spa Water, hydrating glycerin, and vitamin B3. It can quench your complexion and leave it feeling and more comfortable in the dry climate.
DON’T NEGLECT YOUR BODY
With all our time spent being bundled up in heavy knits and winter coats, it can be easy to forget about the skin below your neck. Keep dry skin on your neck, chest, arms, legs, and the rest of your body at bay by applying an ultra-hydrating body cream after you shower, before bed, and whenever your skin feels a bit parched. We recommend Kiehl’s Creme De Corps, as it is lightweight, non-greasy, and can provide your skin with the replenishment it may need.

CARE FOR YOUR CUTICLES
The colder winter weather is notorious for causing dry skin and our cuticles are no exception. Use these celebrity manicurist tips to help to care for your cuticles (and your hands!) all winter long. Plus, try to keep a cuticle oil—you can opt for store-bought or go the DIY route—on hand at all times to help to hydrate dry cuticles on the go!
INVEST IN A HUMIDIFIER
Humidifiers can be used to add moisture back into your room (A.K.A. make the climate less dry)! Leave a humidifier on while you sleep to help combat the dry weather and artificial heat coming from your radiator.
