A Highlight & Contour Hack with SPF, Sir John Explains
The highlight and contour trend is still going strong and as it continues to build steam we’ve seen quite a few variations—from clown contouring to strobing. But, we think we just got clued into the coolest contouring of all—contour and highlight with a skin care spin! We recently chatted with L’Oreal Celebrity Makeup Artist Sir John—the go-to guy for the biggest mega stars around—who shared an SPF hack we plan to use all summer-long. Contour and highlight with SPF? Yes, please!
While we were talking to Sir John about his vacation must haves he paused, asking “You know about my contouring hack with SPF, right?” The looks on our faces must have said it all because before we knew it we were having a sunscreen sidebar. Turns out Sir John figured out a way to make contouring as easy as waking up, with a little help from broad-spectrum SPF. You’ll not only be protecting your skin from the sun’s harsh UV rays, you’ll also be getting a contoured glow that may have you putting down the foundation for the rest of the summer!
How to Highlight and Contour with SPF
“Whenever you’re at the beach, or whenever you’re in the sun, put on SPF 15-20 everywhere skin is exposed. This is so you have a veil of protection, because we all need sun protection,” he shares. “Then, take an SPF 50-80 and put it under the eyes, a line going down the center of the nose, and a bit on the brow bones as a highlight, and then lay out!” Make sure you reapply every two hours to keep from burning—and adjust the amount of SPF based on what’s best for your skin.

Once you’re back inside, wash your face free of all the SPF—which can clog pores. Sir John says that you’ll be so bright in the areas you put the higher levels of SPF—because they will have gotten less color—and your skin will look so contoured and sleek that “you won’t even need concealer!”
