How to Transition Your Skin-Care Routine for Spring
Between the longer days, the warmer temperatures and the blooming flowers, it’s no wonder spring has long been hailed as the season of renewal. Naturally, this renewal should apply to other areas of our life — and we’re talking more than just your wardrobe. Transitioning your skin care with the seasons is an important step in any skin-care routine. To get the dish on the best ways to transition your skin-care routines for spring, we chatted with celebrity esthetician Mzia Shiman.
BECOME A LIGHTWEIGHT
“When the season changes, as estheticians, we change treatments,” Shiman explains — and just like the facial menu at your favorite spa, your skin-care routine should get an update, too. “Skin now requires more exfoliation, more hydration and a switch to lighter products, while making sure that the light products by any means do not have less of a moisturizing effect. For example, when recommending products to my clients in the springtime, I would switch from heavier moisturizers such as Decleor’s Intense Nutrition Cocoon Cream which contains marjoram essential oil, to something lighter such as the Hydra Floral Hydrating Cream with neroli essential oil.”
BELOW THE NECK
“It is also important to remember to exfoliate your body,” Shiman explains. We recommend the Kiehl’s Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub and then complementing the exfoliation with a hydrating body oil or lotion. “We should take care to hydrate our shoulders and body as much as we care for our face,” she says.
RENEW YOUR RADIANCE
When it comes to restoring your radiant glow — the one that may have been hibernating through winter — Shiman says the first step is using the right cleanser. “For instance,” she says, “for spring leading into summer, I like to use more of a soapy cleanser like Decleor Aroma Cleanse 3-in-1 Hydra-Radiance Smoothing and Cleansing Mousse. It gives a thorough cleaning, so you can really soap up and get the whole face, neck, and hairline. Cleansing is important for any type of skin, any age, any gender.” Shiman says to always follow your cleansing with serums and moisturizers, regardless of the time of year.
GET (MORE) SERIOUS ABOUT SUN PROTECTION
While we may have been hiding away indoors all winter long in hopes to avoid the chilly temps, now that the weather is getting warmer we're bound to spend more time outside. While we know (or we should know) the importance of wearing broad-spectrum SPF each and every day of the year — rain or shine — now is the time to get even more serious about that morning application — and reapplication! If you’re on the hunt for a daily sunscreen try La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Ultra -Light Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, a lightweight formula that wears well under makeup. It's also time to be diligent about those all-too-often forgotten areas of skin. Shiman says that even the most dedicated sunscreen wearers may overlook their lips, ears, neck and toes when applying sunscreen.
