How to Get Softer Skin Before Spring
Winter’s harsh winds and cool weather are notorious for drying out the skin and causing a rough texture. Usually those dry patches on your body can be covered up with layers upon layers of thick winter clothing, but the same cannot be said once spring rolls around. While it may seem like we have quite a while to go till winter’s end, sunnier days will be here before we know it. If your body skin isn’t ready to welcome shorter hemlines and beach days, now’s the time to make some changes. Read on for three easy-to-follow tips to achieve softer skin before spring’s arrival—plus, we’re sharing three new La Roche-Posay body lotions that can help you give dry winter skin the boot.
TIP #1: EXFOLIATE
Is your skin looking lackluster and feeling rough? Take that as your cue to start exfoliating. As a refresher, exfoliating involves sloughing the dead skin cells away from the skin’s surface through physical exfoliation, such as scrubs or grains, or chemical exfoliants, such as acids. When focusing on the body skin, reach for body scrubs or exfoliating tools. Dermatologist and Skincare.com consultant, Dr. Arash Akhavan, MD, FAAD, recommends using a “mildly abrasive clean loofah or exfoliative sponge” to slough away dead skin cells. In doing so, you’re not only smoothing your skin, but also prepping it for additional products in your regimen.
Editor’s note: If you’re unsure as to how often you should exfoliate, talk to your dermatologist first as it varies by skin type. However, approaching exfoliation with a gentle touch remains universal for everyone. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends using short, light strokes when exfoliating with tools.
TIP #2: TAKE SHORTER SHOWERS
If you regularly take long, steamy showers during the winter, understand that it’s likely the culprit for your skin’s lack of moisture. Staying in the shower for too long can strip your skin of its natural oils, so try to keep showers short and use lukewarm water instead of hot.
TIP #3: MOISTURIZE WITH LA ROCHE-POSAY’S LIPIKAR BODY LOTIONS
Take advantage of your time spent post-shower. The key to locking in moisture and keeping your skin hydrated is coating it in a layer of moisturizer within minutes of exiting the shower, or while your skin is still slightly damp. The formulas you choose can make all the difference in the world, so be picky. There’s a plethora of skin-smoothing lotions on the market, but right now we’re loving La Roche-Posay’s new range of Lipikar body lotions. Whether you have eczema-prone skin or just need long-lasting skin moisture, these are the body moisturizers you should reach for.
